Dieting and other matters

Introduction: This past week has presented to religious people of convictions toward Christianity and the Jewish Realm opportunities to have an immense say to the world the basis of their belief and the explanation of their celebrations. This explanation should, but doesn’t always come close, to explain from whence came the origin of their practices. Not much time or space will be used to make my own personal observations. There will be no presentation of arguments for or against certain practices of modern religion. There will be a question or so presented.

Also, I wish to commend the academic and athletic accomplishments of the young people of the Calhoun and Gordon County school system. It’s that time of year that things are winding down and recognitions will be at the forefront. We will begin with an observation of the music as presented by the band programs, singing groups and musical plays. Not to be overlooked are the speaking and drama competitions always happening. This aspect of our educational system is not always as visible as other activities in our schools. They are there and behind the scenes there are band directors, voice teachers and drama directors. Those in those positions are working in an area of great value in the development of our young people.

On several occasions in this space the position has been advocated that conceivably the band directors do more coaching than any of us. It is with tremendous respect that this writer observes the detailed routines the marching bands of our schools display on halftime at football games.

We should all admire and praise both the teachers and performers in these areas. Parents, you have a right to be proud.

Church activities and services of local churches:

There is no exception taken here of anyone honoring the Resurrection of Jesus from quotes what you term the Apostles Creed. Both facts are affirmed in that ceremony.” I then asked, “What do you say when you come to that part?” Well his answer, remembered from nearly 50-years ago, as he chuckled and said he mumbled something to get through.

Lest someone feels this old coach has gone off the deep end, let me share with you an interesting fact. Over 60 years ago I was in college at Florida Christian College in Tampa, Florida. I took the Tampa Tribune. Each “Easter,” the Buffalo Avenue Baptist Church had a large ad in the paper declaring “It is a Sin to observe Easter.” Their preacher treated that subject that week in the ad and in his sermon. I found occasion to attend their night services on occasions.

With interest I read every word of the plans of many of the churches in Gordon County for last Sunday and the days leading to that day. A short explanation about diets: We all know what a diet is. Many of us (readers and I) have jumped on a diet or so in our lifetime. Without great discussion, I borrow at this time the words of the famed Covert Bailey (who has more books and articles in nutrition and physical exercise than just about anyone treating those subjects.) Bailey was famous for his plainspoken position that “Diets Don’t Work.”

Read now some thoughts on diet that I ran across:

-“The most fattening thing you can put in a banana split is a spoon.”

-“The toughest part of a diet isn’t watching what you eat. It’s watching what other people eat.”

-“Dieting: Going to some length to change your width.”

-“Most people gain weight by having intimate dinner for two… alone.”

We all need to read and consider what we eat. The second bulleted point above is a take on the advice given to us overweight persons with the words, “You need to watch what you eat.” My answer has long been “I do. I look at every bite I put in my mouth.” Incidentally, the sight is more than rewarding.
