Lyerly United Methodist is looking for all types of vendors for its 10th Annual Car & Truck Show and Craft Festival on Saturday, Aug. 11 from 8 a. m. - 3 p. m., rain or shine, at Dowdy Park on the corner of Hwy 27 and Hwy 114 in Summerville. This year the train will be rolling into the Summerville Train Station at 12: 45 p. m. bring lots of smiling faces from Chattanooga. Booth rental is $ 20 for a 15’ x15’ area. You will need to provide your own tent, tables, and chairs. There is electricity has been redone. The American Red Cross is starting a Northwest Georgia Chapter Club for youth ages 13- 18. This club will give youth members the chance to gain leadership experience and skills, save and change lives, help with the community, build a resume and gain volunteer hours for college applicants. The Northwest Georgia Chapter Club would be involved in Blood Drives, Fundraiser events, Emergency preparedness, First Aid and CPR classes and helping the homeless and veterans. Art Camp & Painting Classes at Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden - July 9 - 13: An exciting camp is open for registration now through the first week of July! If you know of a young artist, who could use an extra dose of some creative fun this summer, sign them up for Art Camp at Howard Finster’s Paradise Garden. There are two sessions based on age, held July 9- 13, and are open for young artists ages 7 – 13. The morning session is 9: 30 a. m. - noon and will host ages 7- 9. The afternoon session is 1: – 3: 30 p. m. with ages 10 – 13. Taught by a variety of artists, students will learn about the art of Howard Finster, along with other artists, and they will explore art fundamentals by experiencing drawing, painting, mixed media, and working with recycled objects. Each student leaves with 3 to 4 finished pieces. All supplies are included! Students bring their own snacks and drinks. At the end of the week, on Friday afternoon from 5- 5: 30 p. m., we invite the camp participants, and their parents and friends for a student Art Show in the Visitor’s Center. $75 for members and Chattooga County Residents, $ 90 for not- yet members. Discounts available for multiple children, and if you refer a friend! There are also painting classes for adults available July 25, 7 - 9 p. m. The Georgia Trail Of Tears Association July 14 meeting will be held at the Gordon County Historical Society ( Oakleigh), 335 S. Wall St. ( US Hwy 41), Calhoun, Ga. 30701 at 10: 30 a. m. Speaking at the meeting will be past President, W. Jeff Bishop, and his topic will be “The Journey To Indian Country.” Jeff’s presentation will be the third in our series of five commemorating the 180th anniversary of the Cherokee removal from Georgia. You may park at the Voluntary Action Center ( VAC) parking lot ( 343 S. Wall St) which is next door to Oakleigh. The meeting is free and open to the public.

On Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., educators will explore the topic of teaching writing with local writer and educator, Martha Templeton at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library. In Ms. Templeton’s session, “Students as Authors: Empowering Students with Words, with Audience, and with Voice,” educators will explore the merits of an authentic writers’ workshop as an avenue for student access to language. Teachers will engage in model lessons, discuss the merits of giving students choice in writing, examine student work, discuss the use of assessment tools to guide and assess the work, and explore the power of individual and group conferences in facilitating student growth. These sessions (and GATESOL membership) are good for any teacher who has English learners in their classrooms! Classroom teachers are invited to join GATESOL and register for the sessions. The Calhoun Housing Authority Board of Commissioners meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month for the regular called Board Meetings at 12:00 p.m. Special Board meetings will be advertised in advance. The Calhoun Area Writers meet every third Friday of the month at The Gordon County Chamber of Commerce from 6-7:30 p.m. The club exists to support writers, from published authors to those who simply enjoy writing down their thoughts.

United Way of Gordon County’s Young Leaders Society provides opportunities for philanthropic service, social, and networking events. Our Lunch with Leaders program provides members with a positive learning experience while allowing members to interact with professional leaders in the community. The mission of the United Way of Gordon County Young Leaders Society is to foster opportunities for volunteerism, philanthropy, and a spirit of caring throughout the communities in which we live and work with one or more of the 19 partner agencies of United Way of Gordon County.
