The Board of Trustees of the CalhounGordon County Public Library, Calhoun, Georgia, will hold its regular quarterly meeting Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, at 4:30 p.m. at the Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library, located at 100 North Park Avenue Calhoun, GA 30701. This meeting is open to the public. This regularly scheduled meeting of the board of trustees will consider agenda items, actions and review proposed amendments and or updates to the constitution and bylaws of the public library. Proposed changes to the constitution and bylaws must be presented to the library board of trustees for review at least 2-weeks prior to the meeting date. The notice must also be presented in the public news organ prior to the open meeting. O.C.G.A. § 50-14-1.
On Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., educators will explore the topic of teaching writing with local writer and educator, Martha Templeton at the Calhoun-Gordon County Library. In Ms. Templeton’s session, “Students as Authors: Empowering Students with Words, with Audience, and with Voice,” educators will explore the merits of an authentic writers’ workshop as an avenue for student access to language. Teachers will engage in model lessons, discuss the merits of giving students choice in writing, examine student work, discuss the use of assessment tools to guide and assess the work, and explore the power of individual and group conferences in facilitating student growth. These sessions (and GATESOL membership) are good for any teacher who has English learners in their classrooms! Classroom teachers are invited to join GATESOL and register for the sessions. On Saturday, Aug. 25 Save Georgia’s Hemlocks will offer a training class on how to save endangered hemlock trees, a beautiful and important feature in our north Georgia communities. The event will be held at the Bent Tree Fireside Lounge, 40 Little Pine Mountain Rd. in Jasper from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Calhoun Animal Control is partnering with Adairsville Animal Hospital to host their 5th annual Open House Vaccine/Adoption Clinic from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on
located at 200 Kirby Road in Calhoun, approximately 3/4 mile west of the National Guard Armory. Services offered will be Rabies Vaccine, $5; DA2PP (5 in 1), $10; Bordetella (kennel cough vaccine), $10; Combo Vaccine for cats, $20. Dr. Amy Johnson and her team at Adairsville Animal Hospital will be administering vaccinations. The facility will be open for viewing and there will be some great dogs and cats for adoption. Calhoun Animal Control’s Clyde Burchett and Dustin Wilbanks will be on hand to answer any questions regarding day-to-day operations at the animal control facility. Families Anonymous is a 12-Step fellowship for family and friends who have known a feeling of desperation concerning the destructive behavior of someone very near to them, whether caused by drugs, alcohol, or related behavioral problems. People can share problems with others who understand, the details of personal stories may differ, but feelings and heartbreak are the same. When you step into the room you are no longer alone, but among friends who have experienced similar problems. Any concerned person is encouraged to attend the meetings, even if there is only a suspicion of a problem your identity is protected in the meetings and are only known by first names. Anonymity of the members is paramount to the success of the program. If you or someone you know is ready to find the peace and Serenity that Families Anonymous members have found through the working of the FA program the group meets every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m., located in Red Bud Road Plaza below Fitness First next to Calhoun Counseling Center (Dr. Bledsoe’s office).

The Calhoun Housing Authority Board of Commissioners meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month for the regular called Board Meetings at 12:00 p.m. Special Board meetings will be advertised in advance. The Calhoun Area Writers meet every third Friday of the month at The Gordon County Chamber of Commerce from 6-7:30 p.m. The club exists to support writers, from published authors to those who simply enjoy writing down their thoughts.

United Way of Gordon County’s Young Leaders Society provides opportunities for philanthropic service, social, and networking events. Our Lunch with Leaders program provides members with a positive learning experience while allowing members to interact with professional leaders in the community. TALLATOONA BEGINS LIHEAP HEATING ASSISTANCE. Nov. 1 is the date Tallatoona will begin accepting appointments for the heating assistance program. The following documents will be needed for appointments: drivers license or state issued photo ID; original social security cards for everyone living in household; proof of citizenship or immigration status such as driver’s license, US military ID, US passport, state issued photo I, US permanent resident card, alien registration card, employment authorization document, certificate of citizenship; most current heating bill within the past 30 days; if your home is heated with natural gas, kerosene, propane or wood you MUST bring both your heating bill and electric bill to the appointment; proof of income for the last 30 days for everyone 18 years or older living in the home including alimony, child support, disability, pension, rental income, retirement, social security, unemployment, wages from work, wages from self employment and workers compensation.
