Lady Warriors open season with split at Fannin County

The Gordon Central Lady Warriors and new coach Sara Broom got off on the right foot on Saturday as they withstood a late push by Fannin County to win their season opener on the road.

Gordon Central held a 2-0 lead going to the seventh, and Fannin County cut the deficit in half with a run, but the Lady Warriors buckled down and go the final out to earn a 2-1 victory.

“It was great to get our first win of the season,” said Broom, who took over this past spring following a previous stint at the school from 2008- 2010. “The girls really fought hard for the win and didn’t panic in the seventh inning when Fannin County got on the board. With great pitching and defense, we were able to close out the game. We’re young and still learning a lot, but I’m extremely happy for how the girls finished the game.”

Leading the way offensively for Gordon Central was Montana Slaughter with a 2-for4 effort. Morgan Frank picked up the win in the circle as she went all seven innings for the complete game and gave up one run on four hits while striking out eight and walking just two.

The Lady Warriors (1-1) fell in the second part of the doubleheader on Saturday, losing 7-3 to Pace Academy.

Gordon Central led 1- 0 going to the sixth inning before Pace Academy put up a seven-run frame to turn the game around. The Lady Warriors scored two runs in the seventh, but that was as close as they would get.

Gordon Central was back at home on Tuesday to host Fannin County for a nonregion test. (For details on that game, see Saturday’s Calhoun Times.) They are on the road to open the Region 7-AA schedule on Thursday at Model at 5 p.m.
