Lady Jackets coast past Woodland, while Jackets earn draw
The Calhoun girls soccer team jumped out to an early advantage and held on, as the boys evened the score late.
The Calhoun Lady Jacket soccer squad enjoyed resounding success in its regular season and home-opener on Wednesday night against Woodland, earning a 5-1 victory to snag a little bit of early-season momentum.
The Lady Jackets were firing on all cylinders early and were sparked by four firsthalf goals, which easily proved to be the difference in the game. Scoring for Calhoun was Jenna Santori, who notched two goals, Mari Morales, Laurel Putnam and Hannah Dimeler.
Those that tacked on assists included Santori, Laure Putnam and Melany Sanchez. The lead was protected by a stout defense that consisted of Halle Rhodes, Grace Ebersold and Karimar Ramos. Keeper Genesis Quintos was also a huge key to the game as the last line of defense in-goal.
The Calhoun girls will look to keep rolling when the team travels to face off against Cedartown on Friday. Kick off is set for 5:00 p.m.
The Calhoun boys soccer team didn’t experience quite the same result as far as potent goal-scoring, but did rally late in the game with an equalizer to secure a 1-1 tie against Woodland.
It was a lethargic attacking start for the Jackets, who quickly found itself facing a 1-0 deficit on the scoreboard. However, according to head coach Matt Rice, his team picked up the pace in the second half and created some quality chances.
After narrowly missing a few opportunities to get on the board, Calhoun finally found the back of the net, as Chris DeLeon knotted the score after converting an assist from Brandon Barrios.
The tie was also preserved by a sound performance from keeper Eduardo Fajardo, who finished with two saves in goal.
The Jackets will also hit the road to challenge Cedartown on Friday, with the kickoff slated to take place at the conclusion of the girls game. For coverage and results of those games, pick up a copy of next Wednesday’s Calhoun Times.
