Winter Round Up: Your guide to holiday events in and around Calhoun

Winter is here and there is no shortage of holiday fun to be found, whether you head over to the Harris Arts Center to take part in the annual Festival of Trees, spend an afternoon with Santa, donate time feeding the community at the Voluntary Action Center, or take a ride to see the festive lights in nearby neighborho­ods.

As you’re planning your holiday hijinks, be sure to consult this round up of places to catch festive lights and cheer.

CHRISTmas Cares

On Saturday, Dec. 12, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., Christian Community Outreach will host its free CHRISTmas Cares festival at World Harvest Church, located at 2335 Red Bud Road in Calhoun. The day will feature arts and crafts, food, music, a visit from Grinch and Santa Claus and more fun activities for the whole family. There will be drawings throughout the day for children’s toys. Christmas film showing

The community is invited to come out to the GEM Theatre and watch Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, and his wife Ellen, played by Beverly D’Angelo, strive for the perfect family Christmas on Saturday, Dec. 12, and Sunday, Dec. 13, in “Christmas Vacation.” The film will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday,

and there will be showings at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday. The GEM Theatre is located at 114 N. Wall St., Calhoun. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online at calhoungem­theatre.org.

Food drive

Hamilton Physician Group’s Calhoun Campus is holiday a food drive now through Wednesday, Dec. 16, to benefit the Voluntary Action Center.

The most requested items for donation include peanut butter, canned soups and pasta, canned meats, cereal, boxed pasta and macaroni, instant or canned potatoes, Hamburger Helper, crackers, evaporated milk, Styrofoam plates or cups, plastic forks and spoons, napkins, butter, sour cream, cheese, cooking oils, coffee and tea. All donations should be dropped off at Hamilton Physician Group’s Calhoun Campus at 160 Curtis Parkway NE.

Christmas film showing

Calhoun and Gordon County residents are invited to come out to downtown Calhoun’s GEM Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 19, and Sunday, Dec. 20 to watch the Christmas classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring James Stewart and Henry Travers. Tickets for the film are $5 and can be purchased online at calhoungem­theatre.org. The GEM Theatre is located at 114 N. Wall St., Calhoun.

Christmas Eve service

Echota Baptist Church invites the community to come out for a time of fellowship and communion on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. There will be a candleligh­t service. Echota Baptist Church is at 35 College Circle, Calhoun.
