Round 2: Leftists lies about real people and our country

- DEAR EDITOR: Ralph Huie Calhoun

This letter is a response to Nathaniel Miknan’s letter to the editor published in the Wednesday,Jan.6,edition.

It seems that my first letter about the crazy and/or foolish things that the left want us to believe struck a nerve. Mr. Miknan responded with some objections to my characterizations. Bravo. I welcome his response (and pardon me if I mis-pronoun). I am particularly pleased that he quoted directly from my letter. I will endeavor to return the favor.

In the discussion of whether the left is pushing their particular brand of science regarding the COVID pandemic in order to control us, Mr. Miknan’s response is, “As new information becomes available, one must change their understanding on a particular topic; nothing is permanent.” I applaud that statement although he has apparently not run that through the leftist filter. Nothing is permanent until the left gets the answer they want, and then they proclaim that “It is settled science; no more discussion,” and that is precisely what the left has done with the pandemic.

Then Mr. Miknan is nice enough to prove another point. I stated that instead of discussing and debating, the left calls people who disagree “idiots”. He proceeds to say that if people were listening to me, they “would again hang garlic in their bedrooms, fearing a nightly visit from Count Dracula.” So instead of discussing the facts, he calls me an idiot.

I am next accused of asserting that there actually are other opinions on the proper approaches to the pandemic rather than the strangling approach in some areas (i.e. California and New York) but which we have largely escaped here is Georgia. My letter was not intended to be a science paper, but for anyone who is truly interested I suggest they get three short booklets from Amazon by Alex Berenson (called “Unreported Truths About COVID-19 and Lockdowns” Parts 1, 2 and 3 for $2.99 each) where he gathers information from studies from scientists presented in scientific journals that cast doubt on some of the shrill left’s “settled science.” I was particularly interested in Part 3 on masks. I wear a mask when in crowded public areas because it is better safe than sorry, but I think that it is more like wearing Mr. Miknan’s garlic.

Mr. Miknan then skips over my assertion that the left continually accuses this country of being systemically racist, perhaps the most despicable of lies. He glosses over it by saying, “Great strides have been made in and must continue to be made in our country.” I agree wholeheartedly with that statement, and I consider it a complete repudiation of the “systemic racist” lie.

He goes on to correct me about the source of the national motto of “E pluribus, unum,” out of many one. While it is technically true that this relates to the union of states rather than people, it is equally applicable to people. As with the states, it does not require that everyone think alike, but it does require a commitment to the ideals and founding principles of the country.

Mr. Miknan would like to get into a discussion of the removal of the Lincoln statue that was paid for by freed slaves that depicts Lincoln standing and a former slave removing his own shackles, but the real issue is the left’s desire to destroy anything that relates to our history if it is objectionable to them in the light of their current “woke” thought. We have just finished a year where the leftists tore down and desecrated numerous statues, often without any apparent knowledge of who the people in the statues were. We all saw it. It is one thing for the government of Virginia to remove Confederate statues and another thing entirely for a leftist mob to tear down a statue.

And, oh my gosh, now we come to “climate change,” the king of the left’s “settled science.” Mr. Miknan asks the question, “What goals does Mr. Huie think ‘leftists’ want to achieve besides clean air and water?” I will be glad to explain. First of all, everyone wants clean air and clean water. This country has worked very hard in a bipartisan manner since the 1960s to achieve what we have today, but that has nothing to do with the left’s almost religious dogma of climate change. There are numerous areas to explore but let us confine ourselves to the Green New Deal, the plan put forward by the economics graduateturned-bartender-turned-U.S.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez. Her chief of staff stated that he originally wrote it, not as an environmental paper, but as a method to fundamentally change the economic system of this country away from capitalism and toward socialism. (See https://news.yahoo. com/aoc-chief-staff-admitsgreen-124408358.html.) The left is always a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Lastly, we come to whether the left hates individualism. Mr. Miknan asks the final question, “If the ‘left’ is against individualism then what are conservatives against?” Well, the left is without a doubt against individualism. Conservatives are against top-down rule. A prime example is mentioned by Mr.

Miknan regarding “a woman’s right to an abortion.” In the first place, there is no such right. It was magically found in Roe v. Wade. At that time the E Pluribus Unum country was peacefully (if slowly) working through this issue. Georgia actually had a more liberal law than many states. But, instead of federally allowing each state to work this out, the country was plunged into 50 years of turmoil on this issue with no end in sight.

Well, in a format debate setting, I make my opening statement, followed by the opposing statement, followed by my rebuttal and then yours. Have at it.
