It was Senior Night on Friday at Gordon Central, but it was three juniors who stepped up with key baskets and free throws in the fourth quarter to lift the Lady Warriors to a region victory.

Gordon Central found themselves in a back-and-forth battle with Model on their home court, and they turned to juniors Cassie Chastain, Brooke Wilson and Kim Passley in the final period to come up with all the offense they needed to earn a 53-50 win in Region 7-AA play.

The Lady Warriors (5-10, 4-7 in 7-AA) led 43-38 going to the fourth quarter, but Model battled back with a quick 6-0 run midway through the period to take a 48-47 lead. After a Wilson bucket to give Gordon Central

back the lead at 49-48 with 1:44 to play, Model’s Montana Moats put her team back ahead with a pair of free throws at the 1:34 mark. That’s when Chastain stepped up to close the scoring out and seal the win for the Lady Warriors with two made free throws with just over a minute left and then a breakaway layup in the final 15 seconds.

Chastain finished with eight points in the game, six coming in the fourth quarter, while Wilson led Gordon Central in scoring with 11 points. Passley added five, including the Lady Warriors’ first points of the fourth quarter.

“I’m very proud of these girls,” said Gordon Central assistant coach Maci Mills, who stepped in for head coach Matt Swanson who missed Friday’s game due to illness. “They came together as a team tonight and made

some big plays, especially in the fourth quarter. That was a great win for our team. I think we’re starting to peak at the right time to get ready for the region tournament.”

Along with the Gordon Central juniors’ contributions to the win, Emily Reece was also in double figures with 10 points.

Tayla Gunn added nine, and Rachel Raley contributed seven. The scoring in the win was a display of how balanced the Lady Warriors’ effort was on Friday as several players contributed not just offensively but defensively and in the rebounding department to earn the victory over Model.

“We put it together collectively as a team tonight,” said Mills. “That’s what it takes for us to be successful, and that showed tonight with everyone making an impact. It makes it hard on other teams to guard us or key on any one of our girls.”

The game was close throughout on Friday with Gordon Central holding a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Lady Devils rallied in the second to cut the deficit to 23-21 at the half. The third quarter featured five lead changes as Model battled back to lead 31-30 midway through the period before an 8-0 run by Gordon Central pushed them in front 38-31 before they eventually took the 4338 lead into the fourth.

Moats had the biggest night offensively between the two teams as she scored a gamehigh 26 points, 22 of those coming in the second half to play a large role in the Lady Devils staying in the game. Madison Moats added seven points, and Caitlin Twilley contributed five.

Reece and Gunn were two of the four Gordon Central seniors honored following the game as part of Senior Night festivities along with Mercedes Coleman and Jada Jaco. Coleman, who is the program’s all-time leading scorer, achieving that feat almost entirely in her first three high school seasons before missing most of this year due to health issues, also had her No. 23 retired by the school following the Senior Night recognition.

“Those four seniors have had a really huge impact on our program,” said Mills. “They helped us earn a State berth in their freshman year and the last two years, and they have really set the tone

for this program and what we expect to do even after they leave. They have been leaders on and off the court for our program, and we are very proud of all of them.

“As far as Mercedes getting her number retired, she definitely deserves that. She is an all-around great kid. Things didn’t go her way for her to get to play her senior year like everyone wanted it to, but she has left a legacy for anyone else that ever puts on a Gordon Central jersey.

Everyone loves her, from her coaches to her teammates to her teachers.”

Gordon Central will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday when they visit Coosa at 6 p.m. They will then await the final seeding for the Region 7-AA Tournament which will begin next weekend.

In the Gordon CentralModel boys’ game later on Friday night:

Model Boys 80, Gordon Central 56

Gordon Central showed some fight with a few scoring runs to get back in the game on Friday, but Model’s lethal outside shooting was too much to send the Warriors to a region loss at home.

Model (18-4, 9-1 in 7-AA) led 22-12 after one quarter before Gordon Central (4-11, 1-10 in 7-AA) rallied to within six at 22-16. The Devils got hot from outside, however, and closed the first half on a ferocious scoring rampage to go into the break with a 47-23 advantage.

The Warriors once again put together a rally, reeling off the first 14 points of the third quarter to cut Model’s lead to 47-37, but once again the Devils took control and pushed their lead back out to 60-39 by the end of the period. They continued that momentum into the fourth to maintain their lead until the end.

Dane Fisher led the Devils with a game-high 23 points, including seven first-half 3-pointers. Model finished with 13 made shots from beyond the arc total in the victory. Carson Cole and Cole

Mathis were also in double figures with 13 points and 10 points, respectively. Jakeness Heard and Deion Richardson each added nine points.

Kade Steward and Tre Williams took on the lead role in scoring for the Warriors in the home loss. Steward had 21 points, and Tre Williams contributed 19. Mac McDaniel also had six points.

Steward and Williams were two of the Warriors’ seven-member senior class honored prior to Friday’s game as part of Senior Night festivities along with Josh Wilson, Wyatt York, Ethan Watson, Isaac Martinez and Jordan Boone.

“The seniors have been a joy to be around,” said Gordon Central head coach Derrick Broom. “I’ve had the opportunity to watch several seniors grow through the past four years, and we’re definitely going to miss them.”

The Warriors will travel to Coosa on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up their regular season before the Region 7-AA Tournament begins next weekend.

Does that sound silly? Maybe you have heard someone say that phrase. What do they mean? Have you heard someone walk into the room telling a story, but you missed the first part. You have to ask them to start at the beginning, to be able to give them an answer.

The mechanic is asked to fix the car. The driver gave them what they thought was the problem, but turns out that the mechanic had to go back and start over, at the beginning.

To fix any problem, you start at the beginning, and plan how to reach the goal or answer.

Someone wanted to know about God. Where do you go to find out about God?

There are some religions that think they know the way. But when you look closer, you find out that they started long after the world began. They want to give you a man’s ideas, which may be good, but they were not there at the start .

The Bible has the answer. It says in Genesis chapter one, and the first verse, In the beginning. God tells you firsthand, because He was there. The rest of the verse says, God created the heavens and the earth.

When you go to the New Testament, it is about Jesus and the way to heaven. It says that these things were written so that you may know the way. When you read the Bible, you learn that Jesus loves you. And that is why he died on the cross, to make a way for you to get to heaven.

He did all that because he loves you. He wants to forgive your sin, and take you to heaven someday to be with him.

The beginning is what God did. The end is up to you. It is settled when you trust Jesus, and believe that He did that for you. Then you will know the whole story.
