Tenney named Calhoun Times sports editor

- By Blake Silvers

Mike Tenney has been named Calhoun Times sports editor.

“I’m excited to get started,” Tenney said. “I’m looking forward to building relationships with coaches, players and fans in the community.”

Tenney moved to Calhoun from the Houston, Texas around a year and a half ago ago, but his parents have lived in Gordon County since the mid-1990s where his grandparents are originally from.

“Mom’s parents moved to Ohio for work at some point,” Tenney said. “But as soon as they retired, they moved right back here. They always considered this area to be home.”

Tenney began his sports writing career as a high school student at the Niles Daily Times in Niles, Ohio in 1979.

“I started writing my junior year of high school,” Tenney said. “I took my first full time sports reporting job at the Liberty Vindicator in Liberty, Texas back in 1981.”

For most of the past two decades, Tenney covered Texas high school sports for the Houston Examiner, a newspaper that is now part of the Houston Chronicle, but has a passion for all prep sports.

“My favorite sport is whatever season we’re in,” Tenney said with a smile. “Whatever is going on at the time ... I’m all in.”

That love of sports started young for Tenney and continues today in his passion for prep coverage.

“I used to go into the stores back home as a kid and buy the Sporting News,” Tenney said. “That’s the main thing I’d always ask for and my parents thought I was crazy.”

Tenney can be reached by email at MTenney@CalhounTimes.com or by calling the Calhoun Times newsroom at 706-6292231, ext. 6011.
