Lady Barracudas place second at District 5 meet

The Calhoun Blue Barracudas girls swim team placed second Saturday at the GRPA District 5 meet at the Calhoun Recreation Dept. city pool.

The Catoosa Great White Sharks girls team won the District championship with 1,372.5 points while the Calhoun girls finished the meet with 949.5 tallies. The Pickens SeaDragons were third with 567 and the Gilmer County swim team was fourth in the team listings.

Winning first place in an event meant 20 points to a team score and the points were doubled in the relays, meaning a first place was worth 40 points.

While the Lady Barracudas may have been second, their excellent showing helped Calhoun win the combined team championship as the locals had 3,149.5 points on the day from their boys and girls team to finish ahead of Catoosa, which ended the meet with 3,047.5 points. Pickens was third with 1,399 and the last team to go over the 1,000-point mark.

The Lady Barracudas also had a large number of girls qualify for the upcoming CASL city meet set for next weekend in Fort Oglethorpe and then the GRPA state meet, which is scheduled for July 15-16 in Moultrie, Georgia.
