Warriors lose close meet at home to Model

In a preview of just how tight things could be in the upcoming Region 7-2A track and field meet, Model just edged out Gordon Central Thursday to win a quadrangul­ar meet at Ratner Stadium.

Model won the close competitio­n with 98.5 points while the Warriors ended the evening with 95.5. Murray County was then third in the field and Haralson County came in fourth and all four of those teams are in the 7-2A.

Of Gordon Central’s six first places, three wins were in the individual events and the other three came in the relay races.

The Warriors’ best event may have been the long jump where they had two of the first three places with Jayden Daugherty winning the event at 18 feet, five inches and senior Jacob Lopez was third at 16-10.5.

Senior quarter-miler Camdon Miles was again victorious in the 400-meter run and Warriors collected first, fourth and fifth place in the race. Miles ran his race in 55 seconds flat and freshman Braylon Neal was fourth at 1:01.91, just a couple steps ahead of teammate Ismail Tirado who was fifth with a 1:02.25.

Junior Matthew Hammock won the 100-meter dash in an event in which the Warriors had two of the top five places. Hammock won with a 12.06 as two Model runners were right behind him with times of 12.13 and 12.18, respective­ly. A Model runner was fourth with a 12.41 and Gordon Central senior Jacob Lopez came in fifth with a fast 12.50.

The Tribe also excelled in the relays, winning three out of the four and they had a couple of excellent efforts, placing first and third in the 4-x-400 and first and fourth in the 4-x-200.

In the 4-x-400, the Gordon Central A team won the race with a 3:51.58 and Murray County was second with the Gordon Central B team placing third.

Miles, Jadon Harper, Owen Lowrance, and Daugherty came up the Warriors’ winning relay and it was Neal, Tirado, DeMarcus Young, and JJ

King on the Warrior quartet that came in fourth.

In the 4-x-200, the Warriors ran a 1:38.70 for first place with Model second at 1:40.50. Murray County A team was third and then the Big Blue B team was fourth with a 1:45.96.

Treveyon Bigby, Harper, Daugherty, and Miles made up the winning group and Hayden Autry, Vance Sirbirkus, Brandon Thomas and Riley Thomas were the four Warriors on the B team.

Gordon Central also earned the gold medal in the 4-x100 relay, winning with a 47.22 to finish just ahead of Murray County, which was the runner-up with a 47.82. Miles, Hammock, Harper, and Lopez on the anchor leg made up that relay for the Tribe.

The Warriors were second

in the 4-x-800 relay and it was one of their four second places overall. In the 3,200-meter relay, they had two of the first four places with the GC A team second with a 10:02.41 and the GC B squad ran an 11:39.95. Haralson County won the race with a 9:47.14.

Owen Lowrance, Austin Zufelt, Ben Traylor, and Alex Lara made up that first twomile relay team for the Warriors and it was Liem Alvarez, Gabe Quinones, Young, and King on the B team.

Lowrance also had one of his team’s three individual second places, finishing as the runner-up in the 800-meter run as Gordon Central had two of the first five in the race. He had a 2:17.15 to place behind Model junior Carson Holder, who won the run at 2:13.28. Lara was fifth for the Warriors, running a 2:35.47 as the next four runners in the competitio­n were also from Gordon Central.

Senior Ashton Henson

led a strong Warriors showing in the pole vault where the team was second, third and fourth individual­ly. The winning height was 12 feet even with Henson second at 10 feet. Autry was third for the Warriors at 8-06 and Sirburkis tied another Model vaulter for fourth place at 7-06.

Harper was second in the 300-meter hurdles as the Warriors were second and fourth in the field. Harper had a 48.84 for the silver medal and Henson came in fourth with a 51.83. The first place time was a 45.56 from Model.

The Warriors also accrued a large number of third places to keep them in contention to win the whole thing.

They had an exceptiona­l day in the discus, coming in third through sixth place. Senior Matthew Burnette was third at 99-04 with Lane Bailey fourth, Jim Traylor fifth, and Cade Pearce was sixth.

The Big Blue also had three

of the top five places in the 1,600 with freshman Austin Zufelt third with a 5:46.71. Traylor was fourth in the race and second for GC and Lara was fifth and third for the Warriors in the mile.

Lara had a third place himself in the two-mile race, running a 15:02.84 in the 3,200-meter run.

In the shot put, Hammock was third at 34-05 for GC with a 37-05 winning it. A 35-09 was the runner-up distance ahead of Hammock.

Henson also had a third place showing the 110-meter hurdles, running an 18.75 for the Warriors.

The team from Gordon County also had a good day in the 200-meter run with sophomore Brandon Thomas third in the field of nearly 20 runners with a 24.82, just ahead of his teammate Bigby, who ran a 26.81 for second place. A 24.47 was the winning time and Thomas was right there as the first two reached the finish line.
