Jackets place fourth at another home meet

Missing some of the big names that have had some nice success through the first month of the season, the Calhoun boys team placed fourth last week at another home meet at the high school.

Southeast Whitfield won the boys meet with 107 points, placing just ahead of Adairsvill­e, who had 102. Ringgold was third at 65 points and Calhoun finished with 58. Coosa came in fifth overall.

Calhoun’s top efforts came in the field events, where they won the pole vault and the shot put. They finished the meet with the top three places in the vault and three of the top four in the shot.

Junor Carter Cloer won the pole vault at 11-08 with teammate Matthew Willams second at 10-06 for Calhoun. Davis Ruddell rounded out the top three at 8-06 and the Yellow Jackets actually had four of the top five with Lucas White placing fifth in the field.

In the shot put, sophomore Blaze Hammett won it at 41 feet even with Calhoun also placing third and fourth. The second place throw was 40-97.5 with Calhoun sophomore Alec Upshaw third at 37-08 and teammate Veal Aiden was fourth at 37-05.

Upshaw also had a solid day in the discus placing second in an event where Calhoun had two of the top four. The winning distance was a 117-01 with Upshaw throwing a 110-08. Gannon Smith was fourth for the Jacketss at 103-11 and a Southeast Whitfield thrower was third at 105-03.

Calhoun also had two top four finishes in the high jump with senior Landon Chattam and teammate Richard Clavino ending in a tie for fourth place at height of 5-04. A 6-02 distance was the winning height while six feet even was second and 5-10 was the third place effort.

Liam Cornett was tied for fourth in the long jump as the Yellow Jackets mustered a lot of their points in the field events. Cornett had an 18-04 on the day along with a Coosa jumper to each place fourth. A 20-07.5 by an Adairsvill­e jumper was first and a 2004.25 was second and the only other distance longer than 20 feet.

In the running events, Chattam had the team’s only top three finish, placing third in the 400-meter run with a 56.87. A 53.53 won it and a 56.67 was second and both of those came from Adairsvill­e runners.

Sophomore Bo Queen was fourth in the 200-meter run with a 24.22 and he just missed a top three placing with third place a 24.18. A 23.86 was the gold medal time.

Distance man Riley Sutton was fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a 12:06.11 as Southeast Whitfield runners took the top three spots. And Sutton had to have a strong kick at the end to get past the fifth-place runner from Southeast Whitfield, who had a 12:07.44. The winning time was an 11:32.16 while second was an 11:37.22 with the only times under 12 minutes.

Calhoun’s other top five finishes came in three different relays as they were fourth in the 4-x-100 and 4-x200
