WOONSOCKET – A patient in Landmark Medical Center’s intensive care unit is facing charges of assaulting two members of the hospital’s medical staff, police said.

Omar Calderon, 33, of 246 Morin Heights Blvd., is facing two counts of assault on a health care worker, a felony.

The alleged incidents took place on Saturday, but the police picked up Calderon for booking as the hospital was about to discharge him on Wednesday, according to reports.

Police reports say Calderon “became hostile” after medical personnel escorted him from a common area of the ICU back to his room, which he had left against the orders of his doctors.

Calderon “started to threaten them, and picked up various items in the room to assault them,” a police report says.

At one point, Calderon allegedly head-butted one member of the staff, and grabbed another one by the neck and pulled him to the floor.

The identities of the victims were redacted from police reports, as was any detail of why Calderon was a patient in the ICU. But police said the victims were both male hospital workers, one 57 years old, the other 32. There is no indication that either was seriously injured as a result of their run-in with Calderon.

Eventually, hospital personnel managed to get Calderon under control. He was returned to his bed, placed in restraints and sedated.

Police were summoned by hospital security to take a formal complaint, but they were advised by the medical staff that they were uncertain when Calderon would be awake or released from their care.

A warrant was issued for Calderon’s arrest upon his release from the hospital.
