WOONSOCKET –A Massachusetts woman allegedly assaulted two police officers after workers at Cumberland Farms called for help in removing an unruly and verbally abusive patron from the Mendon Road store.

Mariam Ducheine, 23, of Marlboro, is also charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in the incident, which took place about 1 a.m. on Sunday.

Patrolmen Sean A. Rochette and Joseph A. Wasilewski said they confronted Ducheine in the parking lot and asked her to stop for questioning, but she refused, cursing at them and using racial slurs. When the officers told her she was under arrest and tried to put her in handcuffs, she allegedly began resisting violently.

Flailing her arms and legs, Ducheine, wearing thick-heeled footwear, allegedly kicked Rochette in the leg, causing his knee to buckle. Wasilewski said he felt a sharp pain in his ring finger as he struggled with Ducheine and later noticed he was bleeding from beneath a loosened flap on knuckle skin, but it’s unclear how the injury was inflicted.

The officers eventually managed to get handcuffs on Ducheine and maneuver her into a police cruiser. At that point, however, she began to repeatedly kick a passenger side window of the vehicle with so much force the “door and the window began to buckle in a manner that made me believe it was about to break,” one of the officers reported.

Patrolman Wasilewski said Ducheine calmed down after he doused her with a blast of pepper spray.

Workers in the convenience store told police they were concerned when Ducheine entered the store cursing loudly in front of other patrons and asking to use the restroom. Ducheine used the facilities, left the store and began yelling in the parking lot.

Then Ducheine punched the front entryway door and, still yelling, abruptly re-entered the store. When an employee told her to calm down or leave, she grew even more infuriated.

Ducheine allegedly accused the worker of being a racist, then grabbed a countertop display of BIC cigarette lighters and hurled it toward the employee. No one was injured, but Ducheine’s outburst prompted employees to call for help.

Police questioned another woman outside the store who told officers she was a friend of Ducheine. She said they had both traveled together from Marlboro to go to a party “somewhere in Rhode Island,” but the woman had no idea why her companion was so upset, according to police.
