Clippers crush Titans

-

WARWICK — The Cumberland softball team picked up where it left off last season.

The Clippers had one of the most potent offenses in Division I last season and they showed despite the graduation of two influential players they might be even stronger.

Kailee Brodeur delivered three hits and two RBIs, while senior first baseman Sydney Provnecal produced a double, single and three RBIs in the reigning I-North champions’ 180, five-inning victory over rebuilding Toll Gate Monday afternoon at Winslow Park.

The Clippers (1-0 Division I) were just as dominant on the other side of the ball. Junior lefty Jocelyn Bodington carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before Titan hurler Quinn Freehman lined a double to start the inning. Bodington finished with a one-hitter to go along with nine strikeouts.

Cumberland scored all the runs it would need in the first against Freeman, as the Clippers scored three times in the opening inning. Cumberland added two more runs in the second and 13 over the final two innings. All-State third baseman Maddi Leite had two doubles and two RBIs, while catcher Emily Anderson and Brooke Turnbull each had a pair of hits.

The Clippers will face another squad not expected to compete in the playoffs next Tuesday when they travel to West Warwick before talented Chariho comes to Tucker Field on April 12 to start the home portion of the schedule.
