Turnbull, Leite guide Cumberland to win over Thunderbolts

-

CUMBERLAND — Most Division I softball teams are lucky if they have one pitcher who can throw a shutout.

Cumberland coach Marty Crowley has three.

Junior All-State Jocelyn Bodington is the unquestioned ace, but Crowley certainly has other girls who can toe the rubber. Ally Pina threw a no-hitter against West Warwick two weeks ago and Monday afternoon sophomore Brooke Turnbull fired a complete-game sixhitter to lead the Clippers to a 7-0 win over Cranston East at Tucker Field.

“Brooke was awesome,” Crowley said. “She got ahead in a lot of counts and she threw the ball well. She was around the plate the whole game and she mixed her pitches well. Her defense also played great behind her. Sam Jalbert played like an All-Stater in center.”

Cumberland (5-2 Division I) pounded up 13 hits against Cranston East starter Kaitlin Drowne. All-State third baseman Maddi Leite went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Jalbert had three hits and scored a run. Sydney Provencal and Renae Lacroix each had two RBIs.

The Clippers scored the only run they would need in the opening inning when Jalbert singled, moved into scoring position on a Lacroix bunt and scored on Leite sacrifice fly.

Cumberland will get another look at one of the top teams in the state when they make the trip to Cranston to take on one-loss West Wednesday. The Clippers destroyed the Falcons last season at the Brayton Avenue Softball Fields thanks to three home runs.
