Undefeated Mounties survive in five

WARWICK — For the second time in injured setter Brett Gould’s absence, the Mount St. Charles volleyball team was pushed to five games.

And, for the second time in three matches, the Mounties found a way to stay undefeated.

Senior All-State outside hitter Jarod Tessier delivered a match-high 29 kills to go along with six digs, while stand-in setter Paul Brodeur produced 51 assists in a 25-22, 27-25, 18-25, 2325, 15-9 road victory over Bishop Hendricken Thursday night.

“Jarod played a big role in the offense,” Mount coach Josh D’Abate said. “We didn’t pass particularly well, so we had to use him the most we’ve used him all season. Our servereceive wasn’t as good as it has been this season.”

Mount St. Charles (9-0 Division I), which also received 22 digs from libero Dan Gould, grabbed two close games to jump ahead of the Hawks. Hendricken answered with a dominant Game 3 and a close win in Game 4 to force a deciding contest to 15.

The Mounties, who defeated Coventry in five last Friday, won the race to 15 to remain the only undefeated team left in the division.

“Before Game 5 I told them that whether we won or lost, this was a mid-season game where we need to work to get better,” D’Abate said.

The Mounties are back in Woonsocket Monday night against struggling East Providence.
