Clippers topple Woonsocket
Bodington tosses shutout for Cumberland
Cumberland junior Ally Pina (above) beat out an infield single in the opening inning, which allowed senior All-Stater Sam Jalbert (bottom right) to score the only run the Clippers would need to down Lundyn Forcier (bottom left) and Woonsocket, 6-0.
WOONSOCKET — The Woonsocket softball team played one of its best games of the season, but the Villa Novans simply ran into one of the best pitchers in the state Friday afternoon at Cold Spring Park.
Cumberland junior lefty Jocelyn Bodington struck out nine Novans and allowed just three hits, while senior AllState centerfielder Sam Jalbert had two hits, drove in two runs and scored a run in the Clippers’ 6-0 Division I victory.
Cumberland (6-2 Division I) scored the only run it would need in the opening inning when Jalbert started the game with a single against junior pitcher Lundyn Forcier. After a Renae Lacroix single, Jalbert scored on a two-out single by Ally Pina.
Jalbert delivered again in the third inning when she smacked a two-run single to open up a three-run lead. Senior Sydney Provencal had two hits, a double and an RBI, while Pina chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Woonsocket (0-7 Division I) was shut out for the second time this week. The Novans received a single from sophomore Maddie Hereth in the second, a single from sophomore Holly Letourneau in the fourth and a single from freshman Maddie Thibodeau in the seventh.
The Villa Novans visit Bay View Academy Tuesday, while the Clippers take on a La Salle team that has lost its last two games Thursday in Providence.
