Andrews leads way for locals at divisions

-

NORTH SCITUATE – Lincoln High senior standout Sam Andrews continued to amaze area throwing talents at Wednesday afternoon’s Northern Division Outdoor Championships at Ponaganset’s High’s “The Reservation” oval.

Not only did she capture golds in the shot put (35-9), discus (129-0) and javelin (1062), but added a runner-up in the hammer throw (154-10). In that latter event, she lost only to Chieftains’ senior phenom Gianna Rao, who unleashed a heave of 171-8.

That was hardly surprising, as she’s one of the top hammer enthusiasts in the country.

Still, the day belonged to Smithfield, who claimed yet another divisional title with 163 points, though runner-up Cumberland proved a tough foe, registering 133.5 points.

Mount St. Charles, which swept the three relays, gained third (95.5), the Lions fourth (62, with Sam Andrews scoring 38 by her lonesome), Burrillville fifth (38) and Woonsocket sixth (32).

The Villa Novans had to do that without the sprinting and jumping talents of senior Quinn Harlan.

Clippers’ senior Julia Dempsey ruled the distance races, snaring the 1,500 meters (4:53.20) and 3,000 (10:47.60), while junior teammate Grace Henson finished second in the 800 (2:28.50) and third in the 1,500 (PR of 5:00.70).

CHS senior Julianne Ross also helped out in the point-scoring department with a third in the 200, third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. In addition, she teamed with MacKenzie Vallely, Sidney Jablonski and Colleen Enestvedt to take second in the 4 x 400 relay (4:27.60).

The Mounties easily garnered the top spot in that event, as Faye Cournoyer, Marina Schmid, Hannah Tousignant and Eileen Whalen hustled to a time of 4:18.20, nearly nine seconds ahead of the Clippers.

The 4 x 100 squadron of Schmid, Whalen and Tousignant combined with Paige Fitzpatrick to reign in 52.40, four-tenths ahead of Smithfield; and the 4 x 800 quartet of Cournoyer, Sidney MacKinnon, Stella Noecker and Britney Theroux to gather first in 10:26.80.

Whalen raced to the 400 title in 1:00.30; Tousignant manufactured seconds in the 100 and 200 dashes (with respective clockings of 12.90 and 27.40), while Schmid accepted runner-up laurels in the 100 high hurdles (17.10) and fourth in the triple jump (32-6 1/2); Fitzpatrick second in the 300 low hurdles (52.30) and sixth in the 100 high hurdles; and Hannah Trottier runner-up in the spear (105-2) and fifth in the discus (83-0).

For the Villa Novans, sophomore Alissiana Folco controlled the long jump (16-1 ¼), and junior MaryAnn Carr sealed second in the high jump (4-11).

Pacing the Broncos was Karlee Cournoyer, who gleaned second in the long jump behind Folco (15-10) and third in the triple (33-7 ¾), while Gabriela Ribeiro earned second in the discus (95-7, 34 feet, five inches behind Sam Andrews); and Sam Praio third in the javelin.

Andrews’ kid sister, freshman Jackie, managed fourth in the shot and sixth in the discus for the Lions.

North Smithfield’s premier placement came from Ali Boutelle, who took fifth in the 100 dash (14.00). She also joined Grace Bischoff, Jacqueline Eddy and Kambry Hansen on the sixth-place 4 x 100 relay.
