Briere, Croteau claim crowns

Northmen sophomore earns tie; Novan beats teammate

-

NARRAGANSETT – While the Woonsocket and Lincoln throwers were their usual stellar selves at the Brian Moretti Invitational Outdoor Championships at the Narragansett High oval on Saurday, North Smithfield sophomore Xavier Croteau stunned even himself.

The affable sprinter, after finishing the 100meter dash preliminaries in a four-place tie for ninth with a mediocre 11.80 clocking, knotted two others for the top spot in a terrific 11.20.

As expected, WHS senior Jared Briere captured his hammer specialty with a heave of 2009 (with classmate Dilyn Cote notching second, 193-4), but also placed fifth in the shot put (45-2 ½) in this precursor to the class and state meets.

No other Villa Novan won an event, though junior Johnathan Upshur took third (6-0) and sophomore Nick Iarussi (5-10) in the high jump; fellow 10thgrader Hezekiah Adeyeye fifth in the 400 (51.60); and classmate Manny Gomes sixth in the 110 high hurdles (16.10).

The quartet of Adeyeye, Gomes, Brendon Louis and Tarique Mauricio contributed another third in the 4 x 100 relay (45.80).

For the Lions, junior Garrett Doyle led the charge, placing first in the discus (146-3), runner-up in the shot (48-7) and sixth in the javelin (139-1), while classmate Evan Grivers managed third in the spear (142-7) and seventh in the put (43-9).

Cumberland junior Chris Choquette nailed down a Moretti title in the long jump (20-3 ½) and took fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.10). In the tightly-contested former event, Burrillville 11thgrader Nick Deering leaped 20-2 ¾ to claim a surprising fourth, yet he added a win in the triple jump (near season-best 42-1 ½).

Deering’s senior teammate, Jeff Pichie, reigned in the 3,000 (9:02.90), but barely outdueled Henricken junior Sean Meehan by .60. Pichie will be one of the favorites to rule at the state championships, though Clippers’ senior Ben Drezek may have something to say about that.

Another Bronco, Antonio Rua, took fifth in the 800 (2:04.70).

The Central Falls’ 4x400 relay team of Albagie Gai, Tyrique DaSilva, Rui Varela Sanches and Kevin Bujan closed with a fourth (3:58.80).

Harlan, Andrews keep winning

CUMBERLAND – Woonsocket High star senior sprinter Quinn Harlan didn’t compete at the Northern Division Championships on Wednesday, but more than made up for it with a splendid outing at the Cumberland Invitational Outdoor Championships at Tucker Field on Saturday.

Harlan swept the 100-meter dash (12.50) and long jump (16-7.50), crushing East Greenwich freshman Faye Preston in the former finals by .60, but edged Cumberland senior Julianne Ross in the latter by a mere two inches.

Lincoln senior Sam Andrews produced two more triumphs in the discus (123-3) and javelin (99-3), then posted fifth in the hammer toss (154-7).

Mount St. Charles assembled several superb outings, as junior Paige Fitzpatrick snared the 300 low hurdles (50.10); senior Marina Schmid placed third in the 110 low hurdles (16.90) and sixth in the triple jump; and sophomore Eileen Whalen third in the 400 (1:00.10).

MSC senior Hannah Tousignant just missed scoring in the same event (1:01.90), finishing seventh a scant 1.8 ticks behind her teammate.

The Mounties’ foursome of Fitzpatrick, Whalen, Schmid and Tousignant tied Mount Pleasant for sixth in the 4x100 relay.

Cumberland, which didn’t have many of its best athletes compete to rest them for more important, upcoming meets, nevertheless ruled the 4 x 800 relay, as senior Colleen Enestvedt, junior Grace Henson, senior Julia Dempsey and freshman Adah Anderson hustled to a 10:08.60 clocking. That happened to be nearly 22 seconds ahead of runner-up Scituate.

Burrillville sophomore Aliza Richard not only won gold in the 3,000 (10:46.70), but also joined Sabrina Charron, Aleice Harmon and Alyssa Vitiello on the third-place 4x800 relay (10:38.60).

Charron and Vitiello also combined with Morgan Bassett and Kariana Roman on the 4x400 relay to earn the same finish.

Broncos’ frosh Karlee Cournoyer continued to amaze older competitors after placing third in the triple jump (338), just an inch-and-a-half ahead of No. 4 Ross. In addition, she mustered sixth in the long jump (15-11).

The Novans’ Gabriela Ribeiro contributed a third in the discus (103-0) and a seventh in the javelin (85-2).
