It was a solid showing for Woonsocket High at the Class A Meet Saturday at Toll Gate, highlighted by the Novans taking the top three spots in the hammer throw.

WARWICK – Cumberland's Julia Dempsey ran a more than 20-second best to capture the 3,000meter run with a first-place time of 10:23.6 at Saturday’s Girls Class A Championship meet, held at Toll Gate High School.

Dempsey was one of several local athletes to shine at the Warwick oval. Woonsocket sprinter Quinn Harlan hustled her way to a first-place finish in the 100 dash (12.30 seconds) and came in third in the triple jump (32-10 ¼).

Team-wise, the Woonsocket girls placed sixth with 42 points while Cumberland came in 12th with 23 points.

The Novans garnered a fifth-place finish in the team standing with 52 points while the Clippers came in ninth with 10 points.

Lincoln throwing specialist Sam Andrews came, she saw, she conquered the Girls Class B field.

A senior and URI commit, Andrews on Saturday made it a clean sweep of the throwing disciplined in the class championship meet held at Portsmouth High School.

She took home first place in the shot put (37-2 ½, nearly two feed ahead of runnerup/Bay View junior Noelay Delacruz), discus (138-8, which easily outpaced runnerup/Portsmouth junior Brianna Shablom, who tossed 119-1), hammer (her mark of 170-4 was followed by the 167-5 tossed by Barrington junior Faith Polando), and the javelin (her toss of 109 feet even bested Westerly junior Victoria Carreiro, who went for 93-1).

The strong showing by Andrews helped Lincoln to a seventh-place finish in the team standings. Westerly took the team prize with 123 points.

Lincoln junior Evan Grivers highlighted the boys local contingent at Westerly High with a first-place performance in the javelin throw. Grivers’ winning toss of 146-8 was followed by South Kingstown senior Bodhi Husing (131-7).

Also for the Lions, who placed fifth with 50 points, junior Garrett Diyle registered two second-place finishes in the shot put (50-1 ½) and discus (149-0) and was third in the hammer (197-5).

The ability that Central Falls sophomore Leonardo DaVeiga has when it comes to covering short distances with blinding speed and the ability that Burrillville junior Nick Deering has when it comes to leaping in the air were rewarded in the best way possible at Saturday’s Boys Class C Championships, held at Ponaganset High’s “The Reservation” oval.

DaVeiga took home a pair of gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. His time of 10.90 seconds in the 100 easily beat the runner-up finisher, Juanita Sanchez senior Anthony Cabrera (11.40). In the 200 event, DaVeiga, once again, romped as his time of 22.60 seconds easily set the pace. Narragansett junior Alex Wingate was second (23.20).

As for Deering, his firstplace finishes came in the long jump and triple jump. His winning mark of 19 feet, 10 inches in the long jump bested second-place finisher and Rogers High sophomore Jarimiah Wilkins (19-9). In the triple jump, Deering distinguished himself with a mark of 42-7 that was followed by Rogers junior Edward Grafallo (41-8).

Despite those stellar individual accomplishments, the day belonged to East Greenwich, which runaway with the team title. The 139 points the Avengers racked up were followed by Rogers (second, 109) and Burrillville (third, 74.5). North Smithfield, St. Raphael, and Central Falls placed sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively, in the team race.

Speaking of the Saints, sophomore Patrick Bullen was tops in the high jump (6-1) and came in third in the 110 hurdles (16.60).

On the girls’ side, Mount St. Charles registered a third-place finish in the team standings with 75 points, which only trailed meet winner Smithfield (165 points) and East Greenwich (85 points). Burrillville came in fourth with 46 points.

Individually, Burrillville’s Aliza Richard was first in the 3,000 (10:38.90). The Mounties’ 4x400 relay team featuring Emily Cournoyer, Marina Schmid, Hannah Tousignant, and Eileen Whalen placed first with a time of 4:16.00.
