Local tennis teams’ seasons come to end

WOONSOCKET – Mount St. Charles’ campaign came to a disappoint­ing close on Tuesday after sustaining a 41 loss to Smithfield High in a R.I. Division I Tournament quarterfin­al.

Matt Dubois posted the lone triumph at the top singles spot, edging Chris Paiva, 7-6 (8), 6-3. Paul Resende put up a terrific fight at No. 3 singles, though the Sentinels’ Max Blais managed a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 decision.

SHS (12-5 overall) clinched on the strength of its two doubles teams.

The Mounties ended its season at 7-9 overall. Smithfield 4, Mount St. Charles 1 Singles: Matt Dubois (MSC) def. Chris Paiva, 7-6 (8), 6-3; Luke Alexander (S) def. Jake Lawrence, 6-1, 6-0; Max Blais (S) def. Paul Resende, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Doubles: Tim Vennema-Will Chasse (S) def. Shaan Arora-Ryan Luisi, 6-3, 6-3; Tom O’Rourke-Nick Cerroni (S) def. Josh DeOliveira-Dre Danneker, 6-2, 6-1.

Crusaders eliminate Clippers

WAKEFIELD – Prout School snatched three of the four singles matches in straight sets to garner a 4-1 victory over Cumberland High in a R.I. Division II Team Tournament quarterfin­al on Tuesday afternoon.

Sebastian Magnotti, Paul Smith and Luke Herberman all reigned at Nos. 1, 3 and 4 singles, while Nate Courtemanc­he rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Jake Freeman in the second spot.

The Crusaders improved to 13-1, while the Clippers’ campaign ended at 95. Prout 4, Cumberland 1 Singles: Sebastian Magnotti (P) def. Kevin Connors, 6-0, 6-3; Nate Courtemanc­he (CUMB) def. Jake Freeman, 6-3, 6-3; Paul Smith (P) def. Griffin Lamoureux, 6-4, 6-3; Luke Herbermann (P) def. Greg Joyce, 6-2, 6-1. Doubles: Kevin Krueger-Stanleigh Lacomb (P) def. Dan Kochanczyk-Tyler Robillard, 6-0, 6-1.

Broncos bounced by Bulldogs

WESTERLY – Burrillvil­le High jumped out to a superb start in its R.I. Division III Team Tournament quarterfin­al against Westerly on Tuesday, as Amara D’Antuono and Bill Hayden both captured easy, straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.

Little else went right, however, as the Bulldogs swept the doubles portion to claim a 4-2 decision.

In the fourth spot, Brian Rivers did put up a battle before succumbing to John Luzzi, 7-5, 6-0.

The Broncos fell to 8-5 overall, while Westerly (11-3) advanced. Westerly 4, Burrillvil­le 2 Singles: Amara D’Antuono (B) def. Sam Kuzu, 6-2, 6-1; Bill Hayden (B) def. Damien Rainone-Kyle Leighton, 6-2, 6-1; Bereket Janat-Ryan Teixeira (W) won by forfeit.

Tigers too much for Northmen

TIVERTON – Tiverton High utilized two singles victories by Dylan Clark and Josh Dore to post a decisive 4-1 victory over North Smithfield in a R.I. Division III Team Tournament quarterfin­al on Tuesday.

Clark defeated Nick Hanoian, 6-1, 6-4, while Dore dismissed Celeste Gambardell­a, 6-2, 6-4.

The good news for the Northmen (8-6 overall) came at No. 1 singles, when Alex Bourque rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 verdict over Zack Pacheco.
