WOONSOCKET – An Upton, Mass., man is facing domestic kidnapping and other charges after he allegedly beat a woman inside a Crepeau Court apartment while holding here there against her will.

Ryan Edward Wadsworth, 39, was arraigned in District Court on Wednesday on charges that also include domestic simple assault and domestic disorderly conduct.

Police said they responded to the Front Street high rise about 3:20 Wednesday morning after receiving a call from a 28-year-old woman who told them she was hiding in the bathroom because a man was beating her up.

Police said the woman was visibly shaken and appeared to have red welts on her face when they arrived. After officers removed Wadsworth from the apartment, she rolled up her sleeves and showed police bruises “all over her arms.”

The woman told police the ordeal began after she tried to get on an elevator in the main hallway, at which point Wadsworth came after her, picked her up and carried her back into the apartment. He pushed her the floor and wouldn’t allow her to get back up, repeatedly pushing her back down.

At one point Wadsworth allegedly slapped her in the face with such force that she briefly lost consciousness. When she came to, she went into the bathroom to call 911.

Though she was locked in, she decided to come out because she was afraid of making Wadsworth angrier than he already was. Wadsworth was unaware that she had called the police at that point.

While she was waiting for officers to arrive, Wadsworth allegedly wrapped his arms around her from behind while she was standing in the living room, then he picked her up and placed her on a sofa, squeezing her body with such force that she was unable to breathe and thought her ribs were broken, according to police reports.

Complaining of pain on her face, head and “all over her body,” the woman was transported to Landmark Medical Center, police said.

Following his arraignment, Wadsworth was released on bail and ordered to have no contact with the victim.

He’s due back in court for another hearing on Aug. 16.
