One week to Brown

Harlan wins three events Saturday

PROVIDENCE — With the state meet just a week away, Woonsocket senior Quinn Harlan appears ready to take home at least one state crown at Brown University.

The speedy Villa Novan warmed up for the pinnacle of the season with three victories at Saturday’s Mt. Pleasant Invitation­al at Conley Stadium. Harlan won the 100-meter dash, in 12.2 seconds, and she follow that victory up with a win in the 200 meters in a time of 25.9. Harlan also claimed the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 8.25 inches.

Fresh off winning four events at the Class B Championsh­ips, Lincoln’s Sam Andrews won the discus with a toss of 126-11. She also finished fifth in the hammer throw with a top throw of 161 feet.

The Valley also saw strong performanc­es from a number of relay teams. Mount’s talented 4x400-meter relay squad finished second in a time of 4:12, while Burrillvil­le came in second in the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 10:23. Lincoln finished third in 10:26 and Mount St. Charles earned sixth in 10:42.

At Saturday’s Bishop Hendricken Invitation­al, the only winner from the Blackstone Valley came in the

hammer throw where Woonsocket senior Dilyn Cote defeated a strong field with a throw of 202-7. The event, which didn’t feature Woonsocket All-American Jared Briere, also featured a fourthplac­e finish from Lincoln’s Evan Grivers (189-2). Freshman state champion Kyle Moison of Lincoln finished sixth with a throw of 184-6.

A trio of locals also earned second-place finishes. Burrillvil­le junior jumper Nick Deering finished runner up in the triple jump with a top jump of 42-1.25. Central’s Augustus Karweh won the event with a jump of 42-5.75.

Deering’s teammate, senior Jeff Pichie, ran the 3,000 meters in 9:00.2 to finish behind champion Matt Walker of Westerly. Walker’s time was 8:57.2.

In the 100-meter dash, Central All-American Demetrius O’Connor defeated Central Falls sophomore Leonardo DaVeiga by one-tenth of a second. O’Connor won the race in 10.8 seconds.

In one of the deepest fields at the meet, Woonsocket sopho- more Hezekiah Adeyeye finished third in the 400 meters in a time of 50.6 Central AllAmerica­n Donatien Djero won in 48.6, while Moses Brown’s Chris Argys ran a 50.2.

Woonsocket’s 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth in 3:35.1, while Lincoln’s 4x800meter relays squad was fifth in 8:34.8.
