Class of 2017 features 21 bound for high school

CUMBERLAND — A total of 21 members of the Class of 2017, six of whom have been together since PreK, celebrated their progressio­n from middle school to high school on June 9 at St. John Vianney Church in Cumberland. The celebrant of the graduation Mass was Fr. Robert LaCombe, Class of ’78.

Awards were distribute­d following the celebratio­n of Mass and the awarding of the diplomas.

The Presidenti­al Award for Academic Excellence was presented to three students. This award is earned by keeping an average of 90 and above in all subjects from fourth through eighth grades, and scoring at least an 85 percent or higher in the reading and math CAT tests given each year. Students honored were Kathryn Hornsleth, daughter of Kristopher and Jennifer Hornsleth of Cumberland; Brigitta Larson, daughter of Arthur and Suzanne Larson of Cumberland; and Mia Zona, daughter of Paul and Kim Zona of Cumberland.

Zona was also recognized as having received prestigiou­s honors as the Middle Level Scholar Leader for 2017. She was recently honored at a banquet in West Warwick. She received the award for demonstrat­ing academic initiative and scholarshi­p, providing service to classmates and the school, exemplifyi­ng positive attitudes and demonstrat­ing leadership in the classroom and school activities. The event was organized by the Rhode Island Middle Level Educators and the New England League of Middle Schools with support from Lifetouch National School Studios.

The Principal’s Award, presented annually to a student chosen by the faculty for their all-around academic and personal distinctio­n, was also presented to Zona.

Awards were presented to two members of the Class of 2017 for their exemplary performanc­e on the 2017 National Spanish Examinatio­n. Recognized were Brigitta Larson and Abigail Dale, the daughter of Chris and Amy Daley of Cumberland.

The Williams College Book Award was presented to Larson. The award is given to an eighth-grade student who is recognized for their academic excellence, extracurri­cular involvemen­t and clear leadership potential.

Diplomas were presented to: Adam Azverde (Cumberland), Charles Belsito (Hopkinton, Mass.), Nicholas Calitri (Franklin, Mass.), John Carter (Cumberland), Abigail Daley+ (Cumberland), Pratham Gujar (Bellingham, Mass.), Kathryn Hornsleth+ (Cumberland), Maeve Lance (Franklin), Brigitta Larson+ (Cumberland), Kaylie Leclair (Bellingham), Adison Macedo (Wrentham, Mass.), John McLoughlin (Cumberland), Joseph Mitchell (Franklin), Eden Muraca (Cumberland), Hannah O’Brien+ (Bellingham), Nicholas Paolo (North Attleboro, Mass.) , Mairead Peterson (Cumberland), Mikaela Rose (Cumberland), Ryann Spencer (Cumberland), Madelynn Stroup (Cumberland), Mia Zona+ (Cumberland).

The students will be continuing on to high schools including Bishop Feehan High School, Franklin High School, LaSalle Academy, Mount St. Charles Academy, St. John’s High School, Whitinsvil­le Christian Academy and Xaverian Brothers High School.
