Steve Clark of Lincoln and medalist Tom Wecal of Woonsocket, both of whom are considered good bets for the tourney, advanced as match play began in the State Junior Golf Championship at the Alpine Country Club. Clark, the 1970 schoolboy titlist, polished off Frank Maio 4 and 3, while Wecal, who is this year’s schoolboy champion, defeated Bob Kerzner 4 and 3. Peter Troy of Wannamoisett upset Bob Carson 2 and 1 then went back to his home course and scored a hole-in-one on the 137-yard third hole with an eight-iron.

The Blackstone Valley will have six two-man teams in the field of 16 with a blend of old guard veterans, promising young stars and a dash of those in between those years when match-play action begins in the RIGA Four-Ball Championship at Metacomet Country Club. Grizzled vets Norman Lutz and Len Jenard Jr, posted a two-day total of 138 and representing the young studs were the Wannamoisett duo of Tom Borah and Kevin Tracy (134) and Kirkbrae’s Matt Zito Jr. and Dan Chabot (137) and Mark Zyons and Bob Baldwin (139). For the inbetweeners, Pawtucket’s Mike Tranghese and Greg Karambelas shot 138 and Pete McBride and Tommy Goryl, playing out of Lincoln and Wannamoisett, respectively, were the final qualifiers with 142.

Ken Killeen tossed a two-hitter, struck out six, walked three and singled in the game’s lone run as Cumberland Post blanked East Bay 1-0 in an American Legion League game. The locals broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning when Brian Reynolds singled, moved up to third on a wild throw and a passed ball and scored when Killeen lined a single to left. Coach Mac Wright’s nine finished the regular season with a 9-9-1 record.
