In the deciding game, right-hander Chick Robertson limited the opposition batters to just three infield singles as the Cumberland-Lincoln Babe Ruth All-Stars rallied from a one-game deficit in their best-of-three series to capture their second state crown by blanking Warwick American 11-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader at Cardines Field in Newport. In the first game, lefty Ronnie Briere scattered four hits, notched five strikeouts, walked four, laced two singles and drove in three runs. In game two, Tony Ferreira, Al Ervey and Billy McCourt banged out two hits apiece for the champs.

Manager Mark Gauthier’s Darlington American 13year-old All-Stars overcame a 7-6 deficit with two bases-loaded walks with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Smithfield 8-7 and capture the state crown. Jimmy Mello tossed a complete-game seven-hitter and collected three hits including a double, while Chad LaPointe added a two-run double to give DALL a 6-5 lead in the sixth frame. “We never gave up in this tournament although we trailed a number of times,” said Gauthier.
