Pawtucket loses on walk off
CINCINNATI, Ohio – After recording a superb 7-6 victory over Detroit in the opener of the RBI Junior Division World Series on Tuesday, the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket saw its luck run out at Great American Ballpark later that night.
Pawtucket squandered a 3-0 cushion entering the back half of the seventh inning and sustained a tough 4-3 walkoff loss to Bradenton, Fla. First baseman Zach Graham provided the gameclinching hit with two outs.
As a result, Pawtucket fell to 1-1 in the tourney’s pool-play portion, and faced the Dominican Republic in its third contest at the P&G Cincinnati MLB Youth Academy Diamond at 11:30 a.m.
Josh Ferreira took the loss, despite scattering nine hits and four runs (two earned) with a pass and two whiffs in 6 2/3 frames. Graham finished 2-for-3 with the decisive RBI, while Tyler Parker went 1-for-3 with a three-bagger, RBI and a run; and Gabe Pollard 1-for-1 with a run.
The defeat ruined Scott Brunelle’s fine outing at the plate; he closed 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI, while Giovanni Canales went 3for-4 with a double, triple and two runs; Seth Dunphy 1-for-2 with a run; and Jake Gaudreau 1-for-2.
The Pawtucketers took a 1-0 lead off of starter Tyler Aberg in the second, then tacked on two more in the fourth as Ferreira mowed down the Bradenton lineup. Aberg lasted 3 1/3 innigs, yielding six hits, three runs (all earned) and a walk without a strikeout.
Parker, however, collected the triumph while allowing only two hits (yet four passes) and fanning a trio down the stretch.
Cam Wilson (1-for-4) and Dunphy each robbed a bag for Pawtucket.
