WOONSOCKET – A man who allegedly slapped his pregnant girlfriend later became so violent that he attacked two police officers, damaged a police cruiser by kicking and slamming his head into it and ultimately had to be confined to a padded cell to prevent him from hurting himself.

Jeremy Brandon Arias, 23, of 179 Sayles St., was arrested Tuesday on charges of domestic assault and battery, two counts of simple assault, resisting arrest, damaging city property and possession of marijuana.

Police said they were summoned to a report of a domestic assault outside Arias’ residence at 5:45 p.m. and first encountered him walking along Sayles Street with a 29year-old female who was hiding her arm underneath her shirt. After repeatedly ordering them to stop, Patrolman Scott Whiting said the woman reluctantly revealed a profusely bleeding gash on her arm – for which she declined medical attention.

The woman told police she had injured herself – by punching through a window on the door to her apartment. Arias was detained, however, because eyewitnesses told police they had seen him, moments before the woman smashed the window, push her through the same doorway and slap her.

Arias became violently combative as officers tried to maneuver him into a cruiser, according to reports. At one point he allegedly bent over while handcuffed and used his head as battering ram to attack Patrolman Andrew Girard. When Whiting tried to assist, Arias allegedly began kicking backwards at the legs of the officers.

The officers got Arias into the cruiser after Whiting pepper-sprayed him, but then he allegedly began to ‘mulekick” the door into his legs and chest.

“Once Jeremy was sprayed the rear door to (cruiser) 301 was closed,” Girard said in a report. “Jeremy instantly began to kick, spit and slam his head against the safety glass during the entire transport from Sayles Street to the station.”

Girard noticed the safety glass bending as Arias began kicking it repeatedly, and later he realized that the glass had actually fractured where it’s bolted to a frame inside the cruiser.

At the police station, Arias remained “uncooperative, failing to follow basic commands,” Girard said.

Arias was initially placed in a standard holding cell and immediately began to “smash his head off the glass,” the officer said. Fearing for Arias’ safety, officers dragged him out and relocated him to a padded cell.

As a result of the melee outside the cruiser on Sayles Street, Arias was charged with assaulting two officers, including Patrick T. McGourty, 34, and Whiting, 29, neither of whom required medical attention.
