Hefty Bob Johnson, whose clutch hitting lifted Fierlit-Korzen Post to the finals of the Regional No. 2 American Legion Junior baseball tourney at Bristol, CT., has been named the tournament most valuable player. The left-handed hitting first baseman banged out 10 hits in 21 trips for a .476 average, batted in six runs and belted one home run, with his hit total, average and RBI marks all leading the tourney. Johnson’s circuit clout won one game and his first inning two-run triple got F-K started on a 7-5 victory over Albany.

1969

Pat McConaghy spun a three-hitter as the Pawtucket Police defeated the Cumberland Police 4-1 in the first of a twinbill softball program in Central Falls benefiting the Jimmy Fund. Ted Dolan, Carl Benson and Milton King were the outstanding defensive stars for Pawtucket. In the second tilt, John Fram was the hitting star of the game with four bingles, but it was not enough as the R. I. Registry Inspectors, paced by Vic Andreozzi and Gene Petit with three hits apiece, turned back the Central Fall Police.

1979

Ken Luther was the perfect company man and Lou Abraham a perfect accomplice as the dynamic duo punched home a pair of runs in their last at bat to give Luther Roofing a 7-6 win over Lafayette Club to capture the Pawtucket Community Softball League championship. Abraham’s single tied the score and Luther’s was the gamer, while Jim Rogers contributed a two-run single and Don Bissonette an RBI single in the second inning for the champs. The Clubmen tallied three times in the sixth frame on hits by Leo Monastesse, Gerry Turgeon, Tom MacLane and Mike Muratori to take a 6-5 lead.
