PROVIDENCE – Devin Fonseca scored three offensive touchdowns and one defensive touchdown to lead Shea to a 42-14 Division II road win over Classical at the rain-soaked Al Morro Complex Saturday afternoon.

“First of all, we had a down week last week, we challenged the kids to come out and practice hard, and they did, so I’m very proud of them,” said Shea coach Dino Campopiano. “We challenged the kids in the meeting room on Monday, we did a lot of soul searching and hopefully this is what we’re going to continue on doing.”

The Raiders (1-1 Division II) got on the scoreboard first when running back Jaylen Lewis broke a tackle and rushed for a 53-yard touchdown down the right sideline just 2:30 into the game.

On the ensuing offensive possession for Classical, defensive tackle Rennie Youbouty recovered a fumble by Classical quarterback Rainer Vargas. After a 61- yard touchdown by Lewis was called back because of a holding penalty,Whitehead scored a two-yard touchdown.

With 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the game was suspended by the referees due to heavy rain and lightning in the area. The delay lasted over 40 minutes.

“It was hard for both teams to come out, but players did a really nice job staying focused and doing what they had to do,” said Campopiano.”

Fonseca added “there were a lot of distractions so we just fought it out and did our thing out there.”

With 2:30 remaining in the first half, Fonseca found the end zone on a toss play.

“Devin is a wonderful individual, forget about what he does on the field,” said Campopiano passionately. “As an individual, he’s a great kid. I’m going to miss him; he produces what he does in practice, he comes on the field, he does everything for us on defense, special teams, obviously in the backfield. He deserves everything he gets.”

The Raiders recorded five turnovers including three interceptions, one fumble and a blocked punt.

“The defense did a great job,” said Campopiano. “I thought we had a couple of mind lapses, but overall they did a great job.”

Classical scored 14 unanswered points in a three-minute span to cut the lead to 21-14 late in the third quarter. Several plays later, senior defensive lineman Jason Rocha blocked punt deep in Classical territory to give the Raiders the momentum back. \

“That was a quick kick that Classical does quite a bit, and we worked on it during the week,” said Campopiano. “My belief is how you practice is how you play, Jason Rocha blocked it and blocked a couple in practice.”

Fonseca took a jet sweep for a 30yard touchdown for the gameclinching score with 11:48 remaining in the game. Several plays later, Vargas threw deep and was intercepted by Fonseca who returned it 80-yards for a touchdown.

“He just threw it deep,” he said with a big smile on his face. “I saw it coming, so I just ran it back, got good blocking in front of me, so shout out to my team.”

The Raiders could’ve scored 50 points, but they had two touchdowns called back due to holding penalties. including one in the first quarter and one by Fonseca late in the game.

“Unfortunately, holding (penalties) happen and it’s a part of the game,” Campopiano said.

The Raiders return to action Friday night against Charho in Wood River Junction.
