WOONSOCKET – A 22-year-old man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly shot out a window of his ex-roommate’s car with a handgun last week.

Roy L. Davis-Smith of 601 East School St. is charged with firing in a compact area, domestic disorderly conduct and domestic vandalism, according to police reports.

The charges stem from an encounter Davis-Smith had with a 25-year-old man with whom he had been sharing a residence until recently. The former roommate told police he was standing on the porch of a third-floor apartment at 426 Ninth Ave. last Thursday morning when he saw a red Chrysler pull up in front of his house with Smith in the passenger seat.

Brandishing a silver handgun, Davis-Smith allegedly got out of the vehicle, looked up at the man and said, “I told you I would get with you.”

Davis-Smith then pointed the weapon at the man’s car, parked in front of the house, allegedly firing a single round into the driver-side window, shattering it. The man told police he backed into his apartment when he saw the weapon, but heard an audible “pop” when it was discharged. Police responded to a report of shots fired moments after the incident, but were unable to locate Davis-Smith.

The victim later told detectives how shaken he was by the encounter.

“He stated that Roy was asked to leave their apartment within the last month,” Detective Sgt. Matthew R. Rich said in a report. The victim stated “he and his fiancée are now fearful for their safety and that of their young infant child due to the incident.”

Police said Davis-Smith was arrested without incident after they traced him to the East School Street address. Police said the found him in the bathroom of an apartment on the third floor about 3:30 p.m. The charges were lodged against him under the domestic violence statute because Davis-Smith had recently shared a domicile with the alleged victim.

Police reports do not indicate that a firearm was recovered as part of the investigation.

Davis-Smith was arrested by the Woonsocket Police Department in an unrelated case of domestic assault in February, but those charges were eventually dismissed, according to the judiciary’s website.
