Doubles teams lead Mounties to fifth straight victory

SMITHFIELD — After winning just seven individual matches in a four-match losing streak to start the season, the Mount St. Charles tennis team has rebounded with five straight Division I victories.

Monday afternoon, the Mounties received victories from the doubles teams of Emily Graham and Ally Romano, Erin McWhinnie and Hollie Wallace, and Elena Caliri and Kaitlyn Cacador in a 5-2 road victory over Smithfield.

Mount St. Charles (5-2 Division I Met-A) also saw No. 2 singles player Saher Arora earn a three-set win and No. 3 singles player Kaitlyn Koller produce a straight-set win.

The Mounties visits Met-B leader East Greenwich tomorrow afternoon.

DaCruz leads Shea to win

PAWTUCKET – Thanks to Erika DaCruz, Shea High snared victory for the first time this season.

With her gritty 6-4, 7-6 (4) decision over Cristy DeLeon at No. 4 singles, the Raiders clinched a tight 4-3 win over the Blue Wave in a Division III showdown of winless squads at Oak Hill’s Tom Duffy Courts on Monday.

Actually, fellow singles representa­tives Sophia Panzo, Anike Fernandes and Elizabeth Ahwireng also played key roles with straightse­t triumphs.

Shea moved to 1-8 in league action, while Hope dropped to 0-9.

Scituate sweeps Tolman

PAWTUCKET – Scituate High managed a 7-0 Division III sweep of Tolman at Slater Park’s Mike Kenny Courts on Monday, but the Tigers did cause a couple of headaches along the way.

At. No. 4 singles, senior Shalia Dalomba battled junior Maud Highfield before yielding a 6-3, 6-4 verdict. And, at the top doubles spot, the duet of Victoria Chmielewsk­i and Stephanie Harwood nearly took the first set before surrenderi­ng a 6-4, 6-1 verdict.

The Tigers fell to 2-0, while the Spartans improved to 4-6.

Woonsocket too much for St. Raphael

PAWTUCKET – It wasn’t easy, but Woonsocket High swept the doubles portion of its Division III clash with St. Raphael Academy on Monday, ultimately claiming a 5-2 Division III victory at the Vets Park courts.

The top duet of Claudine Wehbe and Diana Kouki had to work extra hard during a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Molly Frazier and Jillian Hughes, while the No. 2 tandem of Kara Richer and Emi Flannary mustered a come-frombehind 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Emma McDonough and Lauren Racine.

Serena-Rose Gaskin and Emily Fourier registered the lone wins for the Saints (4-6) at the first two singles slots. Brianna Tsouvalos and Liliana Kouuki nailed down straight-set singles verdicts at the other two for the Villa Novans (4-5).
