October 7

Twenty-four years ago, Saint Raphael Academy fielded its first football team and defeated La Salle 2513 and the Saints hope to pin another defeat on the Maroon and, if so, it would be the first time since that big day in 1928. SRA grid coach Earl Lambert, one of La Salle’s all-time great halfbacks, will have a starting backfield of Ray Gemma at QB, Pop Johnson and Mickey Burgess at the halves and Bob Marshall at fullback. The Oline has Henry Marshall and Jack Orr holding down the wings, George Knowles and Dom Grasso at the tackles, George Elkas and Billy Daly at the guards and Bob Hoxsie at center.

19521962Saint Raphael Academy’s undefeated harriers chalked up their third victory romping over Cumberland, a new member of the Interscholastic Cross-Country League, 19-50, at Slater Park. All-Stater Tim Magill led the Saints home with a winning time of 12:19 over the 2.3-mile course. In another meet, Tolman edged Pawtucket West 25-31 with Tiger captain Ray Marsland victorious with a time of 12:07.3 over the Slater Park course.

Coach Gig Pariseau’s Tolman gridders, who had their 16-game winning streak snapped last week, were unable to hold an eight-point halftime lead and were defeated by North Kingstown 20-14 in a Class ASmall Schools Division contest. The Tigers scored all their points in the second quarter on a Ken Davis nine-yard scamper, Bob Messier’s 13-yard jaunt and a two-point PAT pass from Messier to Andy Asermely. Tolman’s hopes for a possible tie or victory ended in the final seconds of the game when Messier lost the pigskin on a fumble at the Skippers’ one-yard line.
