Decelles scores four in victory

-

NORTH SMITHFIELD — North Smithfield forward Justin Decelles scored four goals in a 24-minute stretch of the first half to lead the Northmen to a 5-0 Division II road victory over Middletown at Gaudet Middle School Monday night.

“We’ve been waiting for him to break out of his shell. He had four shots and he made each one of them count,” North Smithfield coach Eric Korytkowski said. “Two of the shots hit the post and went in. That’s how good he was tonight.”

North Smithfield (6-2-4 Division II) scored the only goal it would need in the fourth minute on a Decelles unassisted effort. Michael Duffy assisted Decelles’ second goal in the ninth minute. Decelles added goals in the 20th and 28th minutes to finish his superb evening.

Riley Crozier produced his second assist of the night when he found Michael Fernandes for the game’s final goal in the 65th minute.

Mounties put scare in Quakers

PROVIDENCE — With 20 minutes left in Monday afternoon’s Division II game, the Mount St. Charles boys soccer team was in position to pull off the biggest upset of the season.

Behind goals from Patrick Kumar and John Collins, the Mounties led undefeated reigning Division II champion Moses Brown by a goal. The Quakers, however, had a response and it was merciless.

Rio Holzwarth scored two goals in a six-minute span and the Quakers added two goals inside the final three minutes to secure a 5-2 victory over the game Mounties.

“I was extremely pleased with our effort today on the defensive end and you have to play a perfect game to beat them,” Mount St. Charles coach Paul Jacques said. “It was going that way for 65-70 minutes. We’ve played seven games in the last 15 days and we just ran out of gas.”

Mount St. Charles (7-3-3 Division II) overcame first-half deficit when Kumar scored in the 32nd minute and the road side took the lead in the 52nd minute when Collins scored after good work from Martin Piette.

Moses Brown (12-0-0) tied the game on a Holzwarth goal in the 61st minute and the Quaker added the game-winner in the 67th. Lincoln resident Tyson Sangermano scored in the 77th minute and Chase Harrington produced a penalty kick in the 79th. Mount reserve goalie Joe Calabrese made eight saves.
