Sequen wins in Tolman defeat

-

PAWTUCKET – It may appear as if Tolman High sustained a 6-1 Division III pasting to Central at the Slater Park/Mike Kenny Courts on Wednesday afternoon, but that’s not the case, as four of the Tigers’ seven matches went to a decisive third set.

The issue on this day? It lost all four.

Fatou Samb suffered a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 defeat to Alicia Sanchez at No. 2 singles, and Victoria Chmielewski battled before dropping a 6-4, 3-6, 63 verdict to Keidry Mona.

The same thing happened to the top duet of Shania Dalomba-Stephanie Harwood, and the third tandem of Jen Miranda-Jackie Affriyieb.

To her credit, Jailene Sequen, the starlet at No. 3 singles, raked Eliza Chamorro, 6-1, 6-2, for the lone triumph.

Tolman fell to 2-14 in league play, while the Knights improved to 3-13.

The second duet of Emma McDonough and Lauren Racine proved pesky in a 6-4, 7-6 (4) loss to Ayanna Tafe and Lena Aspirino.

The Purple moved to 11-5, while the Saints fell to 7-9. Avenue courts on Wednesday afternoon, but it sure didn’t come easy.

The Spartans (9-7 league) had to fight to win one match in three sets, then two others that nearly went the distance. After Holly Letourneau nailed down a thrilling, come-frombehind 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 verdict over Lily Votta at No. 1 singles for the Villa Novans (7-8), SHS snatched the three, with Mia Sepe, Grace Buscher and Sophia Collins all registering tight triumphs over the Novans’ Sitney Lim, Brianna Tsouvalos and Lilliana Kouki.

The WHS No. 2 doubles unit of Emily Flannary and Kara Richer reigned in straight sets, but their teammates at No. 1 – Diana Kouki and Claudine Wehbe – dropped a 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 decision.
