WOONSOCKET — Richard S. Gudz, 73, of Woonsocket, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 14, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was the son of the late Basil Gudz, Sr. and the late Anna (Bukata) Gudz. He was a beloved husband to his devoted wife of 48 years, Mary J. (Jalowy) Gudz.

Besides his wife, he leaves behind his loving children, Christine M. (Gudz) Sweetland and her husband Brian P. Sweetland of Uxbridge; and Gregory R. Gudz and his wife Angela M. Xayarath of Millville. He is also survived by his three beautiful granddaugh­ters, Avery E. Gudz, Emma C. Gudz and Savannah M. Sweetland, of whom he could not be more proud.

He is also survived by his cherished brother, Basil Gudz Jr. and his family, his cousin Joan (Gudz) Mateer, his brother-in-law Walter Jalowy and his family, as well as his lifelong friend Maurice Blais and his wife Pauline of Arizona, with whom Richard and Mary shared years of happy memories.

Richard proudly served in the United States Army and then joined the Woonsocket Police Department as a Patrolman. He served the public in that capacity for over 20 years. Upon retiring from the police department, he worked in the security industry for several years.

He was a devoted family man, who lived a simple life. His family was his greatest source of pride, and they are devastated by this loss. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 174 Harris Ave., Woonsocket. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
