Pawtucket woman killed after being hit by car
PROVIDENCE – A Pawtucket woman is dead after being struck by a motor vehicle on Smithfield Avenue in a heavy downpour as she left work, the police said.
The victim was identified as Frances Rushlow, 53.
The driver, also from Pawtucket, was cited for operating too fast for conditions and failure to exercise due care, members of the Providence Police Department said. He was identified as Derrick Santos, 33 years old.
Police said Rushlow was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries following the accident. She was crossing Smithield Avenune near Colfax Street, near the Pawtucket line, at about 6 p.m., when she was struck by Santos’ vehicle. Police said Santos remained at the scene.
Rushlow was initially listed in critical condition at the hospital, but the police announced this morning she had passed away. But Providence police spokeswoman Lindsay Lague said weather conditions were a factor in the accident and prompted police to lodge the traffic citations against Santos.
A spokeswoman for the Providence police said they aren’t releasing a report at this time because the investigation of the accident is ongoing.
