WOONSOCKET — Margaret Martin, 84, of Woonsocket died, Friday April 27, 2018 at Landmark Medical Center. She was the loving wife of the late John Martin. They were married in 1955 and he passed away in 1997.

Born in North Smithfield, she was a daughter of the late Jose and Macuelina (Almeida) Valente. She was a lifelong resident of the Woonsocket area.

Margaret was a graduate of Woonsocket High School Class of 1952. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education from Rhode Island College and later received her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Rhode Island.

Margaret was a teacher in the Woonsocket Public Schools and taught mostly at the Andrew Street School and Woonsocket Junior High School before retiring in 1988.

Margaret was a longtime member of the Quota Club of Woonsocket and was awarded Quotarian of the Year. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Margaret was talented at sewing and quilting and enjoyed traveling to various destinatio­ns. Margaret was a longtime parishione­r of Sacred Heart Church where she served in a variety of areas of parish life including Eucharisti­c minister, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, holiday bazaars and Christmas parties. In more recent years she attended Precious Blood Parish.

Margaret was a friendly and outgoing woman, she had a vibrant spirit and giving of her time and talent was second nature to her.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia “Pat” Oliano and her husband Martin of Yardley, Penn. She was the mother of the late John J. Martin and his late wife Susan (Serratore) Martin. She is also survived by two grandchild­ren Justin Oliano and John Martin Jr. and a great-granddaugh­ter Gabrielle.

Her funeral will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Precious Blood Church, Carrington Ave. Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Blackstone. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Quota Club P.O.
