Northmen overcome Novans

-

NORTH SMITHFIELD – The good news for Woonsocket High is this: Its netters played Division III rival North Smithfield even in Monday afternoon’s match. The Villa Novans, however, couldn’t field a third doubles team and suffered a 4-3 defeat at the Northmen’s courts. NS (4-8) clinched the verdict when sophomore Dom Fantini and freshman Santiago Toledo won by forfeit. WHS took the first two singles events, with Khamer Savatay and Andy Ratsapho both winning in rather easy fashion, though junior Jarrod Dube responded with a tight 7-5, 7-6 (4) triumph over Xavier Dennis at No. 3, and classmate Colby Girard rolling past Anthony Phrasavath, 6-1, 6-2. The Novans’ No. 1 tandem of Simon Savatphong and Nathaly Phasavath mustered a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over juniors Mali- bu Champagne and Eric Pugliese, yet the second duo of sophomore Tom Fura and frosh Noah Gremour dismissed Tyrese Kaba and Bethany Coppinger.
