Doctor specializing in LGBT treatment joins Thundermist
WOONSOCKET – Dr. Tim Cavanaugh, MD, a nationally-recognized leader in LGBT health, has joined Thundermist Health Center as a family medicine provider, the city-based clinic has announced.
Dr. Cavanaugh will LGBT patients, in addition to the general population, at Thundermist’s 450 Clinton St. location. Thundermist also operates clinical facilities in West Warwick and South County.
Dr. Cavanaugh has dedicated his career to serving LGBT patients in the community health center setting. Thundermist said in a statement he “partners with patients to help them be as healthy as possible” and has dedicated “countless hours presenting cultural competency training” to other health care providers.
“We’re excited to have Dr. Cavanaugh join the Thundermist team,” said Thundermist President/CEO Jeanne LaChance. “Dr. Cavanaugh’s expertise and dedication to the community will help us to further enhance our services to LGBTQ patients.”
Cavanaugh said health care needs to be tailored to individuals to be effective.
“Patient-centered medical care is only possible if we have the appropriate screenings and conversations to understand all circumstances impacting a patient’s health,” he said. “Thundermist Health Center
provides integrated care in an affirming and inclusive environment. I’m proud to join their team.”
Most recently, Dr. Cavanaugh worked at Fenway Health in Boston, where he served as medical director for the Transgender Health Program. Previously, he worked at the Comprehensive Community Action Program (CCAP) in Cranston where he helped develop an innovative hepatitis prevention program, which delivered vaccines and HIV testing services in non-traditional settings.
He is a graduate of Dartmouth University. Dr. Cavanaugh completed his fellowship training in family medicine at the University of Virginia, and is certified through the American Board of Family Practices.
