Pawtucket co-op clinches spot in Division III playoffs

PAWTUCKET – Thanks to gritty play throughout its Division III season finale, the Pawtucket Co-op squad earned a thrilling 5-2 victory over Woonsocket at Slater Park’s Mike Kenny Courts – and sealed a berth in the upcoming state team tournament.

Freshman Jeremy Clark and junior Orlando Correira nailed down easy straight-set triumphs at Nos. 1 and 4 singles, while Dao Thounsavat­h mustered a mighty tough 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (2) decision over Xavier Dennis at No. 3.

(WHS representa­tive Andy Ratsapho cinched an elementary 6-1, 6-1 verdict over Matt Silva at the second spot).

The Tigers/Raiders also claimed two of the three doubles matches, with the top tandem of juniors Josiah Morris and Larry Calmba battling to a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Symin Savatphong and Anthony Phrasavath. The third duo of Nico Bonella and Dan Sossa also notched a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Bethany Coppinger and Alexia Lescarbeau.

Pawtucket climbed to 5-7 in league play. The Villa Novans closed at 3-9.

REBELS OVERCOME MOUNT

WOONSOCKET — For the second time this season, the Mount St. Charles tennis team received singles wins from Matt Dubois, Jacob Lawrence and Tristan Cox against South Kingstown. But, for the second time this season, the Rebels dominated all three doubles matches to claim a 4-3 Division I victory Wednesday afternoon.

Dubois and Lawrence, who are getting ready to compete in the state tournament Friday at Slater Park, combined to drop five games in their wins. Cox, the Mounties’ No. 3 singles player, earned a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Mount St. Charles (3-11 Division I) returns to the court today to finish a match against Smithfield. The teams were through a set Tuesday when the match was stopped because of lightning.
