Lincoln throwers, Smith win big at Class B meet

-

WEST WARWICK – It should come of no surprise that the renowned Lincoln High throwers racked up 78 of the 84 points the Lions scored during the R.I. Class B Outdoor Championships at Monk Maznicki Memorial Field on Monday to snag second overall in the boys’ team standings.

Classical ran away with the team crown with 150 points, while Burrillville knotted host West Warwick for fifth with 47 points. Shea took 12th in the 14-team field with 14.

Still, LHS dominated those four air-filled events. The quartet of senior Garrett Doyle (51-0 1/2), sophomore Kyle Moison (47-8) and soon-to-be graduates Evan Grivers (45-7 ½) and Matt Thibaudeau (40-11) finished first, second, third and fifth, respectively, in the shot put for 26 points; while Moison (145-1), Doyle (135-6), senior Mike Balestra (124-11) and Thibaudeau placed first, third, fourth and fifth for 22 more.

After defending state champion Grivers mustered runner-up in the javelin (144-0) and Doyle grabbed sixth (128-7) to record nine points, the Lions nearly swept the hammer toss.

Purple junior Jake Furland may have uncorked a triumphant heave of 217-10, but Thibaudeau (202-3), Doyle (198-4), Balestra (187-1), Moison (178-8) and Grivers (1717) swept the final top-six spots for 21 more points.

The other six for LHS came from the fourth-place 4 x 800-meter relay foursome of Evan Thompson, Kiran Thakur, Nick Gaitanis and Kyle O’Hern (8:45.61); and Dimitry Lineker’s fifth-place finish in the 100 dash (12.00).

The Bronco males landed only one individual champion, he being senior Ethan Prario in the spear with a distance of 149-0 (five feet further than Grivers), but classmate Nick Deering snatched second in the triple jump (43-2) and fourth in the long jump (19-5 ½).

Other top BHS placements came in the 4 x 800 relay, when the quartet of Cam Charron, Lucas Raimond, Avery Tupper and Thomas Ames took second in 8:38.56; and the 4 x 100 relay, when the unit of Ethan Lambert, Chris Charron, Jimmy Wilson and Tupper garnered third in 46.57.

Junior Andrew McClure chipped in a third in the 800 (2:01.07), while sophomore Jordan Stansfield clinched fourth in the 110 high hurdles (17.45) and fifth in the 300 intermediates (44.50).

Shea sophomore Jaylen Smith captured the 100 dash in 11.52, and also joined Hlton Delgado, Joe Adegboyega and Davontay Vaz on the fourth-place 4 x 100 relay (46.69).

On the girls’ side, Lincoln earned seventh in the field of 11 with 46 points. Like Classical did on the boys’ side, Westerly coasted to the crown with 115 points, 37 more than runner-up East Greenwich and 29 more than the third-place Wizards.

The primary highlight for the Lions came in the the 4 x 800 relay, when the young contingent of sophomore Abigail O’Hern, freshman Emily Ariza, senior Julia Heroux and frosh Riley Specht reigned in 10:11.64, 2.36 ticks faster than Westerly.

Sophomore Amanda Allen landed second in the javelin (92-3, 10 full feet behind East Greenwich talent Brenda McKinney); Specht third in the 400 (1:00.51); sophomore Jackie Andrews third in the hammer (142-9) and fourth in the shot (32-6 ½); and Jennah Saqib fourth in the discus (92-6).

Specht also teamed with Kristen Labossiere, Nicole Lezon and Sarah Fellingham to notch third and score six points in the 4 x 400 relay (4:23.42.

LHS junior Tori Tallo tacked on a sixth in the shot (30-6 ½).
