June 19

1965 Veteran-studded A. F. Young Post of Woonsocket and Fierlit-Korzen Post of Central Falls, finalists in last year’s championship playoffs, will tangle in the opener of the R. I. American Legion baseball season. Veteran Fred Pinocci and rugged Ed Renaud are once again the main cogs of the Young Post mound staff along with Ray Doherty and Russ Blanchard from Burrillville High. Young has several returning regulars in catcher Connie Ribidoux, third baseman Norm Fleury, second baseman Jackie Mullen and outfielders Danny Moylan and Benny Washington. 1985 Ray Turcotte, a junior righthander, hurled a very effective nine-hitter, fanned five and walked four over the nine-inning distance as Woonsocket belted out 15 hits en route to a 15-4 romp over Saint Raphael Academy in a quarterfinal state tournament playoff tilt. Jim Morriseau was the Villa Novans’ hitting star with a double and three singles, two RBI and two runs scored. Darren Kugler, Ed Stenovitch and Tom Connors collected two hits apiece for coach Tom Sorrentine’s Saints which captured the Blackstone Valley Division title for the third time in four years this season. 1995 John Scullin slapped a tworun double and scored twice and Marc DiTomasso twirled six innings of six-hit, three-strikeout ball to pace Cumberland Post to a 6-3 Northern Division win over Fairmount of Woonsocket in American Legion action. Felix Ramos, who went 2-for-3, slammed an RBI double and Steve Lemieux punched a groundball RBI single for Cumberland. DiTomasso earned his second win of the season as Cumberland improved to 2-2 overall.
