Luther to sing at AMP series

WOONSOCKET – There will still be nine more concerts to go after today’s kickoff event, featuring the Chicago-based headliners, Lowdown Brass Brand. The concerts will be held every Friday at River Island Art Park through Aug. 31, rain or shine, according to NeighborWo­rks Blackstone River Valley.

Here is the schedule for the rest of the summer:

July 6

Eh Shawnee (salsa): Born in the Dominican Republic, the Providence-based performer has been an emerging presence in the Latin scene. With appearance­s on the popular TV shows “El Mismo Golpe” and “Divertido con Jochy,” Shawnee has garnered a growing following. Known for her original salsa and merengue numbers, Shawnee tours throughout New England and the DR.

Czesare Santana (folk fusion): Also a Dominican native who was raised in New England, Santana is a genre-bending singer-songwriter who melds Latin-alternativ­e bachata and folk fusion, combining the musical richness of his Latin roots with thought-provoking lyrics.

July 13

Steve Smith and the Naked Truth (rhythm and blues): A Rhode Island favorite, with roots that go back some four decades in the local music scene. A member of the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame, Smith was the first band to sign on for the series. Known for covers and originals, the Naked Truth features a four-piece rhythm section, five horns and Smith, lead vocalist.

The Lexies (rock ‘n roll): Local blues-based rock n’ roll outfit treats audiences to upbeat tunes and strong vocals.

July 20

HuDost (French folk and rock): From Montreal and Kentucky, the band will have a familiar sound for many of Franco-American heritage, performing numbers in both English and French.

Sidy Maiga (West African drumming): The band masters the genre, but also delves into Latin and hip-hop beats with an eight-piece ensemble that includes a singer, dancer, a balafon – an instrument that resembles a wooden xylophone – and the kora, an African stringed instrument that looks like a cross between a lute and a harp.

July 27

The Mallett Brothers Band (alternativ­e country): A melting pot of country, Americana and roots rock.

SwampBirds (folk): Based in Providence, the band is a collaborat­ion of gui- tarist and lead singer Jen Long, drummer Pedro Weinberg, Brian Jablonski on pedal steel, Vanessa Gilbert on accordion, Kate Mick, banjo, and Jennifer Jane on back-up vocals.

Aug. 3

Adaawe (world music): All-female African fusion band, blending rhythm and blues, pop, jazz-funk, Latin and reggae sounds, with gospel harmonies. The California-based band also puts on a display of modern dance choreograp­hy

Aug. 10

Bassel & the Supernatur­als (neo-soul and funk): With roots in Syria, Supernatur­als combines traditiona­l sounds of soul music and funk with lyrics that draw on the tragedy of civil war in Syria that has personally affected the Bassel family.

O.B. Howard (folk): Indie-folk trio working out of Providence.

Aug. 17

Kevin Burt (blues): Burt is a selftaught musician who sings and plays guitar and harmonica. He was the 2018 Internatio­nal Blues Challenge winner.

The Taylor Brothers Band (blues): Inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in 2018, Jeff Taylor has been playing music profession­ally for over 40 years.

Aug. 24

Quincy Mumford (pop): Singer with an upbeat attitude, Mumford recently released his first album, “State of Mind.”

Emily Luther (pop): Woonsocket native known for her versatile chops as a contempora­ry vocalist. Luther first came to national attention after her YouTube cover of “Someone Like You” went viral and caught the attention of talk-show mogul Ellen Degeneres, who invited Luther to perform on her show. Since then, the songstress has shared the stage with vocal greats like Dionne Warwick and Yolanda Adams before her appearance on the 2017 season of the hit NBC show “The Voice.”

Grace Vs Gravity (Rock): Grace Vs. Gravity is a Providence-based modern rock band with strong pop and metal influences.

Aug. 31

Boo City (Soul, rock, rhythm and blues): Band describes itself as “energetic, whimsical, fun, melodic and edgy all at once.”

Eastern Medicine Singers (Algonquin drumming): Based in Providence, Eastern Medicine Singers are dedicated to keeping American Indian culture alive with vibrant music sung in both the Massachuss­et and Wampanoag dialect to create music that combines story and culture.
