Louisiana man wanted for attempted murder arrested in city apartment
WOONSOCKET – A suspect wanted in Louisiana for allegedly shooting a man in the head during a robbery that occurred about a week ago was arrested at a Cooper Street apartment by state, federal and local law enforcement Friday morning.
James A. Santos, 37, of Shreveport, was taken into custody by members of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force, the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Massachusetts and the Woonsocket Police Department, said Col. Ann C. Assumpico, superintendent of the state police.
Santos was wanted by the Caddo Parish Sheriffs Office on charges of attempted second-degree murder, armed robbery and second-degree kidnapping, according to the state police.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred in Shreveport on July 20 in which the victim was allegedly robbed at gunpoint by two masked and armed suspects. After being bound with duct tape, the victim managed to free himself and tried to run away.
Armed with a handgun, Santos allegedly chased after the victim, firing five rounds at him. One struck the victim in the head but did not penetrate his skull, state police said.
Assumpico said the arrest was a result of a joint investigation by the three agencies that later took Santos into custody.
Santos was later booked at the Lincoln Woods Barracks of the state police and later appeared in Sixth District Court, Providence, on a charge of being a fugitive from justice in Louisiana. He waived extradition and was ordered held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions pending his return to Louisiana.
