City man is state’s 12th motorcycle fatality of year
RI on pace to more than double last year’s total; state police issues safety reminder
PAWTUCKET — A Woonsocket man became the 12th motorcyclist of the year to die in a road accident Thursday, prompting the state police to issue a safety reminder for twowheel travelers.
The victim was identified as Jose Carrasquillo Baez, 29, of 65 Arnold St.
Col. Ann C. Assumpico, superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police, said Baez was traveling southbound on I-95 near the Lonsdale Avenue ramps at a high rate of speed when he collided with another vehicle and was thrown from the motorcycle. Suffering from severe head injuries, he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No one else was injured in the crash, which occurred about 9:25 p.m.
Assumpico said Baez was not wearing a helmet.
Citing figures supplied by the state
Department of Transportation’s Office on Highway Safety, Assumpico said motorcycle fatalities are occurring at more than twice 2017’s pace this year.
Between January 1 and July 31 last year, the state had logged only five fatalities involving motorcyclists, according to the OHS figures.
Assumpico urged all motorcycle riders and their passengers to wear helmets and protective equipment. She said motorcycles should also be watchful of other motorists.
The state police issued a checklist for motorcycle safety after Baez’s death. In addition to wearing a helmet and a face shield or goggles, RISP said motorcycle riders should always wear bright, protective clothing; keep their highbeams on even during the daylight hours to improve visibility; avoid distractions such as cell phone or other electronic devices; and heed to rules of the road.
“Ride defensively,” Assumpico said in a statement. “Don’t assume other drivers can see you; be aware of other vehicles nearby; allow extra distance between other vehicle and be prepared to take evasive action if need be.”
