Uxbridge hosts meet-and-greet with new school superintendent
UXBRIDGE – As the new school year approaches, the Uxbridge School District is setting aside a night later this month for teachers, parents and students to meet their new superintendent, Frank Tiano.
A meet-and-greet with Tiano will be held Monday, Aug.
20 at 6 p.m. at the Uxbridge Free Public Library.
Tiano, assistant school superintendent for the Framingham public school system, was hired by the School Committee in April. He was one of three finalists for the job, which included Kate Burnham, special education director for North Andover Public Schools, and Nadine Ekstrom, interim senior director of elementary teaching and learning for Brookline Public Schools.
Tiano was with the Framingham public school system since July 2015 as the assistant superintendent of schools and as the assistant superintendent of community development and engagement.
As Framingham’s assistant superintendent, Tiano collaboratively redesigned the District Improvement Plan model and process to incorporate priorities of all schools and departments, and and co-developed feedback, evaluation, and support models for building principals to facilitate professional growth and reflection. He also collaborated with Framingham State University, Massachusetts Bay Community College, and Keefe Technical High School administrators to extend existing partnerships
in order to integrate educational content, pedagogy, and related opportunities.
In addition, Tiano led the revision of the Emergency Response Plan with district, school, police, and fire leaders including creation of Emergency Response Communication Plan to increase the well-being of students and staff.
Tiano addressed district communication issues as defined in School Committee Communications Task Force by creating and managing district social media; developing cable access programming; creating pre-recorded matrix of ConnectEd calls; developing a cache of emergency communications for building/district use; developing press release protocols; and participating in website development. In addition, he created the Administrative Communications Task Force to identify internal communication issues and co-developed administrative meeting structure to foster vertical and horizontal communication and problem solving.
Prior to his arrival in Framingham, Tiano served in the Chelmsford Public School District for 15 years, the last five as superinten- dent, and 10 years in the Nashua Public School District.
Over his 27 year professional career, Tiano has held the position of elementary teacher, elementary assistant principal, elementary principal, middle school principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent.
In 2014, Tiano was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as one of 100 top school leaders from across the nation to participate in the first-ever National Connected Superintendents Summit at the White House. Tiano was among exemplary school leaders who were recognized for their leadership in helping transition their districts to digital learning.
Tiano also served as president of the Merrimack Valley Superintendents Association and was awarded ‘Service Above Self’ by the Chelmsford Rotary.
Tiano has been a featured speaker for the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents on a variety of topics, such as school safety, incident management, oversight of special education programs, and preparing the community for educational change.
He is a member of the Global Studies/21st Century Superintendents Network and has supplemented his studies with field based experiences around the education- al systems of Finland, Germany, and Poland.
Tiano was also a member of the board of directors for Valley Collaborative.
Tiano holds a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Bentley College; a Master of Arts in teaching from Simmons College; and a Doctor of Education from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.
