Dick Gleason spun a two-hitter, fanned seven and walked two as Mal’s upset Fairlawn 3-1 in a Pawtucket Little League encounter. Lefty Chiavarini had the key blow for Mal’s with a triple. Fairlawn averted a shutout in the last inning when Jim Duffy singled home Ed McDermott. In other action, Dick Bishop belted a solo homer and a run-scoring single to pace Saylesville to a 6-5 win over Nathaniel Greene, while Carl Allen played a brilliant game at shortstop for the losers.
1962
Failure to sink an 18-inch putt on the 19th green cost Charlie Karboski Jr. of the Pawtucket Country Club the state junior golf championship at Metacomet Country Club. With the match deadlocked after the regulation 18 holes and his opponent, Bruce Morin, lying three a foot from the cup, Karboski pulled his short putt to the left of the hole and gave Morin another life in the match. Karboski sank an eight-footer on the next hole for par, but bogeyed the 21st to lose the hole, match and championship to Morin’s regulation par.
1972
Pawtucket’s Ralph (Hop) Harrington, one of New England’s most successful drivers, heads the entries in the NASCAR sanctioned stock car featured race at Seekonk Speedway. Harrington, a consistent winner at the track during the late 1950’s, returned three weeks ago and has won two feature races including last week’s 50-lap event in which he edged George Summers in a five-car battle over the closing laps. He will be behind the wheel of Dick Armstrong’s 1971 Pinto.
