WOONSOCKET – The city Board of Canvassers has certified the list of nine candidates vying for school committee in the Nov. 6 city election. All nine of the candidates submitting nomination papers to the canvassers were confirmed for the election ballot.

The school committee election will be the first held since the city adopted a charter change in 2011 establishing a mayor appointed and city council confirmed committee. Local voters on July 24 overwhelming approved a charter question reversing the prior action on creation of an appointed committee and setting the stage for the Nov. 6 election of a new committee.

The charter change came after the mayor and the city council could not agree on the most recent appointment to the committee and one seat of the 5-member appoint- ed panel was left vacant as a result.

The list of candidates certified by the Board of Canvassers includes:

• Paul Aldege Bourget of 365 Elm St., a current member of the city’s appointed school committee.

• Donald G. Burke of 59 Edmund St., a past member of the appointed committee.

• Rebecca Capwell of 269 Prospect St.

• Donald L. Hoard of 58 Read Ave.

• Lynn B. Kapiskas of 163 Prospect St.

• Eleanor M. Nadeau, a past member of the school committee.

• Matthew Oriani of 202 Holley Lane.

• Soren D. Seale of 234 Dawn Boulevard, the current chair of the appointed committee.

• Kelly Wilson of 309 Prospect St.

A primary election for school committee was not required due to the number candidates running.

A primary will be held on Sept. 12, a Wednesday, for the mayoral contest although one of the three candidates on the ballot, Albert R. Beauparlant, withdrew. Both of the remaining two candidates, incumbent Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt and former City Council President Albert G. Brien, will move onto the Nov. 6 election regardless of their primary vote tallies.
